Ovum Off the Grid Riesling 2019

Similar to 2018 Base Line in it's aromatic complexity of tropical fruit bound by cool climate aromats, 2018 Off the Grid also offers it's classic quince and apricot character. There is a yellow-orange fruit skin complexity on the palate that almost gives the wine the appearance of tannin. It's high acid gives a sense of elegance and complexity that OTG is known for, with a bit more restraint than power in this vintage. This 2018 reminds me of 2013, which was my favorite offering at the time, in that is has power AND grace. Next to 2018 Memorista, this OTG should be the longest lived wine of the vintage.

The beauty of balance. The ideal tension between acid and sugar. Tons of fruit, layers of smoky minerals, a delicately powerful finish, a wine with enough electricity to power its own grid. - Marcus

In the deep forest, somewhere on the Oregon/California border, exists a vineyard far from any civilization. The only thing close is an old sip and stop grocery that closed long before our time. It's under the radar, almost as if the lines on the map stopped, and this place was beyond. That's what the wine conjures, an unusual place from a different time.

The isolated Off the Grid Vineyard lies close to the Oregon-California border in the remote southern reaches of Oregon, just twenty-five miles inland from the Pacific. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 1500 feet and is planted on a dried riverbed, so that the vines struggle in the rock strewn soils and very cool micro-climate.

2015 vintage notes

The 2015 Off the Grid Riesling from Ovum comes in at 12.5 percent octane and offers up a classic bouquet of apple, white cherry, citrus peel, stony minerality, petrol and dried flowers. On the palate the wine is medium full, focused and tightly-knit, with fine balance and grip and a long, quite dry and nascently complex finish. This is tasty today, but really could do with at least a few years’ worth of bottle age to start to really blossom. 2018-2030+. 92.

2014 vintage notes

So mouthwatering I'm drooling just thinking about it. Racy acidity mingles with a touch of natural sweetness. Think the scent of a juicy apple meets a fresh pear. The intermingled flavors of this perfect Riesling are seamless: mango and peach marries a smoky savoriness with undertones of flinty minerals and a sense of lift on the finish. A truly unique vineyard site and wine! - Andy

Grown in one of the few vineyards with alluvial soil in Oregon way down south in the Illinois Valley. In the hands of John and Ksenija, this site's potential is tough to beat.

An original and delicious Riesling, powerful and exciting. John and Ksenija combine the essence of Old World Riesling with a new-world twist all their own. Smoky flint, hint of oranges and peaches, clean fresh citrus-driven acidity.
