Happy 40th birthday Le Puits Sec—unquestionably one of the Valley's Grand Crus!

"Evesham Wood" and "age-worthy" are nearly synonymous and yes, the 2024s will age a very long time if you want them to. But the strength of Erin's '24s is how vivacious, generous, and gratifying they are without sacrificing their legendary age-ability. This is the magical balance of 2024 on display and holy cow, is it delicious.

This is ideally illustrated in Le Puits Sec, an especially silky and elegantly layered vintage for the flagship estate Pinot Noir. Inviting violet-accented cherries and red berries with just-right intensity, a breeze of blossoming rosemary with baking spices and orange oil, a latticework of Le Puits Sec structure that's wrapped in buoyant, pure flavor.

2023 vintage notes

96 points Decanter: "Le Puits Sec is the main estate vineyard at Evesham Wood, planted by founder Russ Rainey in 1986 on its own roots, with additional plantings in 1991 to three different Dijon clone Pinot Noirs. It’s certified organic and dry-farmed. Elegance abounds in the aromatics, with a melange of fresh red berries, blood orange and resonant notes of forest floor. Stunning on the palate with mouthfuls of fresh woodland berry fruits, dashes of savoury mint and soaring notes of fresh cranberry and spicy blood orange. Exotic spices lead the finish with touches of sea salt."

The winery's certified organic, estate vineyard crown jewel shines so brightly in 2023, gleaming with red, blue, and purple tones, both cool and warm. Up front, this is a vivid, engaging Le Puits Sec Pinot–it’s extroverted side. But there is deep and ample structure barely beneath the surface and we know this wine will age for a very long time, should you be able to resist its youthful exuberance.

2022 vintage notes

96 points Paul Gregutt: "I’ve missed a couple of recent vintages, but in my experience this is the best release from this estate vineyard to date. A generous mix of berries, cherries, dried herbs, peat, coffee grounds and a whiff of sea spray, the complexity belies the lightness and overall elegance. Being a bit of a fruit hound, I salute the core of lush fruit here, which is amplified and expanded with all the resonant highlights. Brilliant work."

Here's the crazy thing: can and should our advice to buy J every year be applied to Le Puits Sec? For many years we experienced a notable step up from Le Puits Sec to J but over the last three vintages, that step has flattened—one is not necessarily better than the other, they are just different expressions of Evesham Wood's estate vineyard. So the answer is yes.

What a gorgeous wine. The nose jumps out of the glass with concentrated aromas of plum, violet and berries. That lift and concentration carries through as the mixed berries become even more concentrated while beautifully balanced bright acidity leads to moderate tannins on the finish. This is why Erin came to Le Puits Sec in 2007 and never left. -winemaker Erin Nuccio

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We like to sell wines that we like to drink. We prefer to taste the wines sell over several days; we want to know how a wine will evolve, how it pairs with food. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with guidance on how and when it'll be its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in ways that you can actually relate to. We battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We give you the unfiltered truth about a wine. We believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Testimonials

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
