It all begins with La Combe Verte. Melding substance and style, a textured tapestry of delectable fruit woven with flowers, minerals, and vivacious acidity, La Combe Verte is first and foremost fun to sip. A dream-team of vineyards make up this wine: Freedom Hill, Hyland, Koosah, Sojeau, and Witness Tree.
We're well passed a decade of surging Chardonnay popularity so we sometimes take for granted some of the basics of the Chardonnay conversation, for example: what is this Chardonnay like? Winemaker Ken Pahlow's self-described style is "classic," unquestionably leaning toward and learning from Burgundy (and away from what many would refer to as "California"). His Chards are aromatic, mouthwatering, savory, minerally, and fresh with texture and weight that makes them glide through your senses.
The 2023 La Combe Verte Chardonnay is a thoughtful blend, drawing from the elegance of volcanic Eola-Amity Hills Chardonnay, the intensity of old vines at Hyland Vineyard, and the powerful marine sedimentary character of Freedom Hill. Blending our Chardonnay is where winemaking becomes art, resulting in a wine of remarkable density and precision. The palate opens with vibrant notes of white peach and tangerine, gradually revealing layers of texture intertwined with hints of green apple and summer honeysuckle. Hints of hazelnut add dimension to the evolving mineral and saline qualities that gracefully evolve in the finish.
