At Walter Scott, we embrace the wisdom of Burgundy's legendary importer Becky Wasserman, who famously said, 'You can always judge a great domaine by the quality of their Bourgogne bottling.' Inspired by this ethos, we pour the same passion into our Willamette Valley wines as we do into our single vineyard selections.

Translating to 'The Green Fault' or 'The Green Valley,' La Combe Verte pays homage to the lush landscapes of the Willamette Valley and our cherished friends at Patricia Green Cellars, the incubator for the fledgeling Walter Scott first vintage.

The 2023 La Combe Verte blends the elegant, volcanic soils of Eola-Amity with the powerful, marine sedimentary expressions of Sequitur and Freedom Hill Vineyards, resulting in a wine that embodies our deep-rooted commitment to working with the best wine growers and vineyards in the Willamette Valley. The inviting nose envelopes the senses with the suggestion of both ripe red raspberry and black cherry complimented by fragrant hibiscus, violets, and the comforting warmth of sandalwood. On the palate, dense fruit, succulent tannins, and vibrant acidity create a lively interplay, revealing the remarkable balance of power and grace that defines Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.

Vineyards:

Bracken Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills AVA
Freedom Hill Vineyard, Mt Pisgah, Polk County AVA
Sequitur Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge AVA
Sojeau Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills AVA
Witness Tree Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills AVA

2022 vintage notes

Loaded with lush black cherries and fresh summer berries—equal parts lively and slurpable—you'll want to dive right in. Expands toward and through the finish with savory-sweet earth tones and a lovely burst of freshness that plays perfectly off the dense and delicious fruit. Buy a case, drink half now-ish and continue the fun for years to come. A blend of these vineyards: Freedom Hill, Sojeau, Temperance Hill, Witness Tree, and Distraction. -Marcus

The inviting nose envelopes the senses with the suggestion of both ripe red & black fruits complimented by fragrant summer flowers and the comforting warmth of earthy spices. The dense fruit, succulent tannins, and vibrant acidity all come together to produce a lovely & balanced example of what the Willamette Valley has to offer. -team Walter Scott

2018 vintage notes

The most Willamette-Valley of La Combe Verte Pinots, the '18 blends all the right parts from the valley, from top notch Eola-Amity Hills bright and savory goodness to Ribbon Ridge's lushness, to Dundee Hills sweet red fruits and baking spices, to Freedom Hill's power. At once engaging and surprisingly stacked in its structure, here's your window into 2018 -- you'll love the view. - Marcus

The 2018 La Combe Verte is composed from the volcanic Eola-Amity Hills vineyards of Lewman and Sojourner, blended with their north valley counterparts of Sequitur and Red Hills Estate Vineyards. The finishing touch is the old vine fruit from the powerful, marine sedimentary Freedom Hill Vineyard.

2015 vintage note:

Don't think of this as value Pinot. Think of it as awesome Pinot that happens to be well-priced. The perfect marriage of cherries and summer plums, and complementary sweet/savory/spicy elements that make this the kind of thing you want to drink like juice. The average vine-age in this in a whopping 25+ years! From Eola Springs, Freedom Hill, Sojourner, Temperance Hill, and Vojtilla Vineyards. - Marcus

2014 vintage note:

Vibrant, dark and savory, this jumps from the glass. Capturing the immediate allure of a warm vintage like 2014, maintaining balance and freshness, this juice is for real. As for flavors, think black cherries and fresh summer blackberries.

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We like to sell wines that we like to drink. We refer to taste the wines sell over several days; we want to know how a wine will evolve, how it pairs with food. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with guidance on how and when it'll be its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in ways that you can actually relate to. We battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We give you the unfiltered truth about a wine.We believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Testimonials

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
