About 2023 Bethel Heights High Wire Chardonnay, from Decanter:

‘I’ve tasted nearly 4,000 wines in my three years at Decanter; this is my first 100-point wine’

Perfection. This is my first experience tasting this captivating Chardonnay from the Bethel Heights estate, which is sourced from some of the oldest vines on the property, a former walnut orchard. This wine is 100% own-rooted Wente clone Chardonnay, planted in 1977. The winemaking includes a year in 50% new French oak, with the full lees and only one stirring. Named for the old high-trellised ‘California sprawl’ used in the vineyard for these vines, The High Wire hits all the high notes in the 2023 bottling. Winemaker Ben Casteel has delivered a 2023 masterpiece for what is quickly becoming America’s greatest Chardonnay appellation, the Eola-Amity Hills. While these California heritage vines struggled to fully ripen in the early, cooler days of the Willamette Valley, this modern iteration is a classic—subtle and delicate aromas of citrus curd, acacia honey and crushed chalk offer tremendous elegance. The palate offers a swooning complexity, with depth reminiscent of lemon oil, beeswax, and rich, resonant white florals. This is a stroke of brilliance disguised as a Chardonnay, teeming over with complexity and nuance, as good as anything made anywhere in the world. Nothing is out of place; the finish lingers, seemingly forever, with a smooth feeling of crushed chalk and a richness of baked Meyer lemon.

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We don't like to sell wines that we don't like to drink. When we first taste a wine, we determine if it merits further attention. If so, we taste it later that day, perhaps pour a glass that night, then re-taste it over the course of several days. We want to know how a wine will evolve, or if it'll fall apart. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with a rough idea of when it'll be showing at its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in meaningful ways that you can actually relate to. We actively battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We work to give you the unfiltered truth about a wineWe believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
