Eyrie "Original Vines" The Eyrie Vineyard Pinot Gris 2024

David Lett planted the first Pinot gris vines in the United States. David's son, Jason, now makes a tiny amount of Pinot gris from those 50+ year-old original plantings. History aside, this is a special wine, completely in its own league of American Pinot gris. Liquid gold, defying simple categorization and description. The perfect melding of complexity and refreshment, it can be enjoyed now or aged for a decade or longer. Very limited. - Marcus
This Pinot gris is a liquid manifesto. We believe Pinot Gris has every bit of Pinot Noir’s ability to reflect the nuances of site, craft, and vine age, and this wine is our statement of proof. The 2024 vintage was given special attention to honor these old vines and their enduring voice. Planted from 1965 through 1974, these are the very first Pinot gris vines in the New World—now 60 years of age and still farmed organically in our original Dundee Hills vineyard, The Eyrie. To this day, no older Pinot gris vines exist anywhere outside of Europe. Their deep roots and long history give the wine a remarkable depth and authenticity, carrying forward the pioneering spirit that introduced this variety to the wider world and continues to shape its legacy in Oregon.”
98 points Paul Gregutt: Wine is often acclaimed as history in a bottle. But some wines capture history in unique ways. The Eyrie is the original vineyard planted by David Lett; and these are the first Pinot Gris vines planted in the U.S. Now almost 60 years old, they grace this special bottle with a kind of tenderness, a gentle assurance that powers the subtle intensity, impressive depth and exceptional length of this wine. Scents and flavors of pollen, lemon flesh and rind, citrus and green apple are present, along with dustings of spice and further extensions into seashell minerality and lemon verbena.
