97 points James Suckling: "Beautifully fragrant notes of cocoa-dusted raspberries and crushed blueberries with dried rose petals, sencha tea, cherry chocolate and crushed rocks. Ground spices, too. It shows both delicacy and power, with a compact and silky feeling to the tannin structure and impressive acidity which carries the freshness and tone through to the finish. Attractive tension of crunchy blue fruit and spices."

I find the note above to be remarkably spot on. So many delicious dark red and blue berries, much more silky to me, especially after the bottle was open a few hours. Even within the short and storied history of Zephirine, the 2021 is a fabulous showing. -Marcus

94 points WIne Spectator: "Graceful and seductive, this Pinot is seamlessly structured, with rich raspberry and blueberry flavors and forest floor and violet accents all gliding on the polished, lingering finish. Drink now through 2031."

2019 vintage notes

97 points The Wine Advocate: “The 2019 Pinot Noir Zéphirine is so expressive this vintage! Matured for 14 months in 20% new oak, it has a pure fragrance of blueberries and lilac, aniseed and earth, gaining aromatic nuance and depth with time in the glass. Medium-bodied, the palate begins with bursts of acidity and a flourish of spices that glide seamlessly through the mouth for an incredibly persistent, floral finish.”

97 points James Suckling: “Redcurrant, sour cherry and smoke on the nose. Hibiscus, too. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and lively acidity. Vibrant and juicy on the palate with a bright core of redcurrants and dried herbs. Layered and balanced, with a long, savory finish. Very vertical and deep. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.”

2018 vintage notes

95 points Wine Spectator: "Deep in structure yet loaded with finesse, offering raspberry, pomegranate and rose petal accents that build tension toward fine-grained tannins. Captures the essence of Eola-Amity. Drink now through 2030."

2017 vintage notes

94 points Wine Spectator: "A dynamic wine, showing both grace and structure, this opens like a flower bloom, revealing notes of raspberry, crushed stone, fresh violet and savory tea. Builds richness and tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2027."

96 points James Suckling: "This has a very impressive sense of density and power with such immaculate detailand definition, in terms of tannin and fruit. The aromas are in the spicy and floral zone with blue-fruit and leafy nuances. Deceptively elegant and convincingly excellent pinot noir. Drink across the next decade."

The 2017 Zéphirine has a wonderful nose with aromas of red berries, toast, herbs, and purple flowers that calls to mind the perfume of the Zéphirine rose. There is complexity and layered flavors, with a round, almost juicy, central core of fruit. Flavors include crushed red berries, cassis, subtle vanilla, minerals, and cedar. Rich and generous, the texture is soft and silky with bright acidity and fine tannins. The finish is very elegant and long, suggesting that this Zéphirine has an exciting story ahead. Santé! - Veronique Boss-Drouhin

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We like to sell wines that we like to drink. We refer to taste the wines sell over several days; we want to know how a wine will evolve, how it pairs with food. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with guidance on how and when it'll be its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in ways that you can actually relate to. We battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We give you the unfiltered truth about a wine.We believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Testimonials

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
