The Yamhill-Carlton American Viticultural Area (AVA), established in 2004, is a horseshoe-shaped region northwest of McMinnville. Low ridges surround the two communities, made from ancient marine sediments perfect for grape growing. Grapes tend to ripen earlier in Yamhill-Carlton, even in cooler vintages; the region is known for its deep, broad, and powerful Pinot noirs.
Yamhill-Carlton is home to pioneers like Elk Cove, superstars like Ken Wright Shea, and Soter, and insider gems like Belle Pente.
