92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A juicy, medium-bodied, lively, structured style, as well as attractive red and black fruits, spice, tobacco, and leafy herbs-like aromas and flavors. Raised all in barrels (10-20% new), it has a slightly Old World-like sense of acidity and tannins but brings beautiful fruit, a supple, elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a smoking value and well worth seeking out."

Betz is without question or doubt one of the greatest Cabernet wineries in Washington State. We're talking single digits. That makes today's Cabernet that much more of a head-spinner: Cabernet Sauvignon from Betz for $34.95. And the best part of all is that we tasted it—it is awesome! as in we are actually shocked at how great it is for the price.

Don't get us wrong: you can and should buy Betz's flagship Cabernet, Pere de Famille. It is worth every penny of its $85 price tag. But you'd be nutz to pass up this Cabernet deal.

What sets Betz apart is their mastery at conveying so much Cabernet intensity without the high-octane alcohol levels of nearly all of their peers; Untold Story clocks in at 13.8% abv.

The 2019 Untold Story shows intensity the moment it hits the glass with a deeply colored purple core that’s almost opaque. The color speaks to the power of the aromatics: rich black fruits—blackberry, plum and cassis—swirl about, picking up graphite and crushed herbs with air. The layered palate is hedonistically plush, but still balanced thanks to fresh acidity and a fine tannic backbone. The lengthy finish carries a delightful mix of fresh herbs, crushed berries and spice. In a word, Untold Story is delicious.

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We don't like to sell wines that we don't like to drink. When we first taste a wine, we determine if it merits further attention. If so, we taste it later that day, perhaps pour a glass that night, then re-taste it over the course of several days. We want to know how a wine will evolve, or if it'll fall apart. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with a rough idea of when it'll be showing at its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in meaningful ways that you can actually relate to. We actively battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We work to give you the unfiltered truth about a wineWe believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Testimonials

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
