Over the years, an actual handful of wines have risen to a special category: they sell out rapidly because they are awesome and because you, our loyal customers, know it.
Without exaggeration, today's wine typifies this phenomenon. It's one of Washington's best Cabernets, regardless of price—and in this vintage, when price is taken into account, it is the Cabernet of the vintage. Boom. It is one of our favorite wines we've offered every single year since the first release over a decade ago. In 2020 only 94 cases total were made and the last four vintages have sold out in fewer than 48 hours.
By this point, our Manu Propria fans are already busy ordering but for the uninitiated, we can only be talking about one wine: Manu Propria Ex Animo Cabernet Sauvignon, the personal label of Mike Macmorran, the winemaker for the Mark Ryan empire. Mike makes Manu Propria to honor one of Washington's great growers and vineyards, Mike Sauer's Red Willow Vineyard.
Despite Manu Propria's intensely loyal following among our customers, it remains virtually unknown in the "wine world." Good! We don't need to create even more demand for it. Let the rest of the wine world fight over lesser, more expensive Cabs while we—you—are one of the lucky few who has Manu Propria in your collection and in your glass. Lock yours in today!
It opens glowing with cherries, draped with cedar and violets. Then it plunges deeper to black currants, plums, and black cherries, gliding on a magic carpet ride of equal parts velvet and silk. The delectable finish combines Cabernet fruit and a comforting vanilla ribbon. Another attribute of this wine that makes it a customer favorite: it is an absolute joy to open now—even to pop and pour. Manu Propria is the glowing neon sign reading "Cabernet." Follow that sign.
Manu Propria Ex Animo, from the Latin meaning "by my own hand, from the heart," is Mike's statement to honor and celebrate Red Willow Vineyard and the Sauers, a pioneering wine family who planted some of Washington's first Cabernet vines in 1973.. -Marcus
2013 vintage notes
Mike makes a small amount of Manu Propria—only 135 cases in 2013—and we're the only source in Oregon (and one of the few in the country).
The 2013 opens with aromatic, savory notes of sage, thyme and olive combining with blackberry, cassis and barrel spice. The palate presents with a sweet core of dark fruit flavors and undercurrents of fresh herbs and smoke. The wine finishes with great length and fine-grained Cabernet Sauvignon structure. The 2013 is comprised of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc.
