Original vines, as in the first Pinot noir vines planted in the Willamette Valley. The historical importance of Original Vines cannot be overstated. But it's so much more than history, it's delicious present. A wine of tremendous character and ineffable finesse, no other Oregon wine smells like Eyrie's Original Vines. I can put certain aspects in writing–the exquisite perfume of gently crushed red berries, fir forest, delicate rose, orange essence, sexy musk–but you have to taste and feel it for yourself. The elusive Pinot noir sweetness is mind-melting.
A truly collectible bottle of Pinot noir, absolutely, but it is so wonderfully captivating now; I poured myself another glass and it's not even lunch.

96 points James Suckling, Top 100 US Wines 2020: "Very pure, fragrant red-berry and cherry aromas here with a fresh, sweetly fragrant and spicy edge, as well as forest wood. The palate has such volume and completeness with a very succulent, red-cherry core that has effortless depth and pure-fruit flavor. Very fresh finish. Drink or hold."
95 points Vinous: "A highly complex bouquet evokes fresh red berries and cherry, along with suave Asian spice, potpourri and mineral accents. Shows superb delineation on the palate, offering vibrant, spice-tinged red fruit liqueur, rhubarb and spicecake flavors that pick up a strong floral pastille nuance as the wine opens up. Finishes extremely long and lively, with fine-grained tannins providing shape and discreet grip to lingering raspberry, mineral and floral notes."

95 points Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pinot Noir The Eyrie has a medium ruby-purple color and pretty nose of violet, dried hollyhock, prosciutto, leather, blueberries and boysenberries with red currant, oolong tea leaves and earth aromas. It’s medium-bodied and ultra silky with gobs of perfumed fruit layers, a very finely grained frame and mouthwatering acidity, finishing long and perfumed. Yes! Jason Lett says that the Outcrop and The Eyrie Pinot Noirs come from the same clones and elevation and have a similar aspect, but the main difference between the two wines is vine age—the average vine age for the Outcrop is 27 years, while average vine age for The Eyrie Pinot Noir is 47 years."

It’s impossible not to be overwhelmed by the historical significance of the site where Willamette Valley’s first Pinot noir vines were planted, and then to be overwhelmed by the mesmerizing aromas, to smell elegance, undeniable sexiness wafting from the glass. Its movement through the tasting experience is what distinguishes Original Vines, with a truly symphonic ebb and flow, from piano to forte, leaving a haunting Pinot purity on the ultra-pretty finish. Planted in 1965(!), at an elevation of 260 to 410 feet, the soil and elevation are exactly the same as Outcrop, it is truly the sensing of vine age and its unparalleled pedigree. - Marcus

The historical significance of Original Vines cannot be understated. From the original Pinot noir vines planted in Eyrie's pioneering Dundee Hills estate vineyard, founded in 1966. The vines make wine of tremendous character, ineffable finesse, and superior elegance. No other Oregon wine smells like Eyrie's Original Vines. Raspberry, crushed rose, pine, pepper, sexy musk, a citrus top note -- the most exquisite perfume. The flavors convey delicacy with supple red fruits and blood orange accents, deftly adding black tea and mineral as the finish pulses with Pinot noir sweetness. If you want a truly collectible bottle of Oregon Pinot noir, look no further. While thoroughly captivating when opened now and tasted throughout the course of a day, I recommend cellaring for a few years and up to 20...or beyond.

2010 vintage notes
We opened the Eyrie Reserve again last week and attempted to capture its essence with mere words. We need a new dictionary. Complexity and completeness is where I started, with "sexy" underlined in the margin next to my notes. Mouth coating, richly textured, balanced fruit and earth. Powerful but elegant, this Pinot is transfixing. Made from Oregon's Original Pinot noir vines by Jason Lett, who also makes the Black Cap wines. - Marcus
Wine Spectator 92 points: - Light and refreshing, this is deftly balanced with acidity and fruit against nubby tannins. The berry and tangerine notes persist enticingly on the extended finish. Holds many possibilities. Drink now through 2017. - H.S.
2009 vintage notes
Wine Advocate 93 points: The 2009 Pinot Noir Reserve is a bit more concentrated and complex. Despite its light color, it reveals considerable depth and concentration for the vintage, incipient complexity, and an elegant personality. It is likely to evolve for 2-3 years and given Eyrie's track record, should drink well for a decade. It is one of the stars of the vintage.
2007 vintage notes
The 2007 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve is a suave, velvety wine with an alluring perfume of smoke and toasty red fruits. More concentrated and riper than the Estate bottling, this stylish effort will evolve for 1-2 years and offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2019. It is one of the stars of the vintage. - Wine Advocate

"Light, bright red. Seductively perfumed aromas of black raspberry, cherry preserves, incense and potpourri. Luscious red and dark berry flavors display impressive depth, with zesty mineral and Asian spice notes providing lift. Gains weight with air while maintaining striking vivacity and precision. The nose: big, earthy, sexy and musky, but balanced by a very beautiful femininity - perfume, floral notes of cherry blossom and white flowers, vanilla and talc; and then some hints of black licorice, pie cherry, and cassis.
The palate: rich, creamy, and mouth-coating, backed up by great acid and silky tannins. Lots of bright cherry/cherry cream, some yummy meatiness and spice, watermelon and strawberry jolly rancher candy, and a spicy sweet finish that keeps on going...and going...and going. Elegant, special, again Eyrie has produced one of the best Pinot's I've had the chance to taste. - Adrienne

Tanzer 93 points: " Light, bright red. Intriguing aromas of red and dark berries, incense and potpourri. Weighty but fresh, offering an array of palate-staining berry flavors, cherry skin and a sexy candied rose quality. Impressively energetic pinot with excellent finishing clarity and sappy persistence. These vines were planted in 1966."

"The 2003 Pinot Noir Reserve is the product of an exceptionally challenging hot vintage in which successes were the exception. Somehow The Eyrie Vineyards was able to produce a wine of elegance and grace. The wine was aged entirely in seasoned oak. Light to medium ruby in color, it has an enticing perfume of cherry and raspberry, a silky smooth texture, concentrated flavors, and a lengthy finish. It may lack the depth and richness of a great year but it is a superb effort in the 2003 vintage." - Wine Advocate

Possibly the last of the 2002 Oregon Pinots to be released, 2002 was a near perfect vintage, and comparisons are being made between this wine and the world famous 1975 Eyrie Pinot noir that shook up the wine world.
