This one is simple: I have two favorite Washington Syrahs and this is one of them (Force Majeure's Red Mtn. is the other, and they are quite different). Like the essence of a perfect midnight, dark, slightly mysterious, thrilling. Lavishly textured and creamy, whatever structure is here is so exquisitely integrated. The fruit that's here is enveloped in molten mineral, lavender, dry-aged beef, crushed rock, and...I just wrote expletives in my notes. Profound and complete, I can think of no better way to honor and capture Washington's first Syrah planting from which this is made. -Marcus
97-99 points Jeb Dunnuck (barrel sample score): "The 2021 Syrah La Cote Patriarche is going to be up there with the finest Syrahs from the state. Coming from old vines in the Red Willow Vineyard and not destemmed, this beauty sports a dense purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of bloody blue fruits intermixed with iron, lavender, smoked meats, and some gamey nuances. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and structured, yet flawlessly balanced, it’s going to need bottle age, but this is world-class juice."
2019 vintage notes
98 points JebDunnuck: "My favorite in the lineup (but that's splitting hairs), the 2019 Syrah La Cote Patriarche offers a gorgeous, Guigal Côte Rôtie La Turque-like bouquet of ripe black and blue fruits, smoked meats, ground pepper, and rocky minerality, and it shows more floral and violet notes with time in the glass. Deep, rich, and full-bodied on the palate, it has ripe tannins, incredible purity of fruit, and a thrilling finish. It's going to flirt with perfection in 4-5 years and cruise for 10-15 years in cold cellars. Bravo!"
2016 vintage notes
95+ points Wine Advocate: "The 2016 La Côte Patriarche is very promising indeed, offering up complex aromas of crunchy cassis, violets and pungent black pepper. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, leading with a lavish attack that gives way to a layered, vibrant mid-palate with a deep core of crunchy fruit and bright balancing acids. The finish is long and beautifully defined. This contains the fruit of vines planted in 1986, some of the oldest Syrah in Washington."
