A blend Maresh planted in 1970 and Weber planted in 1983. More floral, and a bit darker than the Dundee Hills with vibrant long fruit. Pomegranate molasses, cherry and citrus rind. -Jim Maresh

2021 vintage notes - 2022 notes coming soon!

98 points The Advocate: "The 2021 Pinot Noir Old Vines comes from the Maresh Vineyard, from vines that were planted in 1970, and has a singular expression with detailed, spicy accents reminiscent of bitters or amaro. "You only get those high-toned essences if you pick al dente," winemaker Jim Maresh explains. "It's easy to volatilize all that away." The Old Vines has a medium ruby color and arresting aromas of orange bitters, mossy bark and tobacco leaves complementing a deep core of pomegranate, rhubarb and cranberry. The light-bodied palate offers remarkably pure, detailed flavors. It has velvety tannins, seamless freshness and a very long finish with a flourish of spicy accents."

A half-shade darker red than the Maresh bottling, this is the perfect pairing of succulent fruit and delicate spice. As I stare out my home office window at our raspberry patch, I love what Jim says below about how this wine "drinks like eating a perfect raspberry." -Marcus

From 52 year old Maresh Vines in front of the Red Barn. Very loud and typical Maresh signatures of black tea, cinnamon and white pepper along with the usual Dundee Hills red fruit. Concentrated Pinot noir under 13%. Drinks like eating the most perfect raspberry. Firm tannins, long finish.

2019 vintage notes

97+ points Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Pinot Noir Old Vines comes from Wadenswil clone vines planted in 1970, and it was matured in barrel for 20 months. Medium garnet, it has a distinct mineral character, with tones of flint and iodine complementing spicy cranberry and blackberry preserves. The palate is silky and layered, with intense, dark red fruit and a very long, flavorful finish. It's got some inherent power that will allow it to develop well in bottle."

Us: The first Old Vines that is 100% Maresh Vineyard, specifically Block 1: 1970 plantings right in front of the Maresh Red Barn. Gorgeous, red-fruited, super-sexy.

The first Dundee Hills old vines bottling produced without any Weber Vineyard in the blend. This comes from 100% Maresh Block 1 planted in 1970 right in front of the Red Barn tasting room. Highly perfumed and complex Wadenswil aromas balancing strawberry, pomegranate with gunpowder and flint. A bit more delicate than the Maresh or Weber with lighter red fruits but it's sturdy and surprisingly the firmest of the 2019s.

2018 vintage notes

93 points Wine Spectator, #22 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2021: "Structured yet elegantly layered, with pretty violet, raspberry and spiced tea accents that build tension and toward polished, medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2029."

While only the third vintage of Old Vines, the reviews for the first two vintages speak for themselves. 2016‒96 points Wine Advocate, 95 Wine Spectator and 2017‒96 points Vinous. We’d have to search our memories and several wine databases to find another Pinot noir that so quickly ascended to supremacy. The reason is in the name: Old Vines.

A very Maresh vineyard nose of Oolong tea, black cherry, red currant and white pepper. More Weber on palate with a wave of dark red Worden Hill fruit carried by a strong but refined structure that has become seamlessly integrated from 20 months in barrel. 65% Maresh and 35% Weber vineyards, the vines were planted between 1970 and 1983.

We predict the press will go gaga over the 2018; it reminds us of a mythical blend of 2016 and 2017. It has the darker power of the former and the wonderful elegance of the latter.

2017 vintage notes

A blend of Maresh (~70%) and Weber (~30%) Vineyards, sporting an average vine age of 42 (that's forty two) years, 2017 Old Vines is perfumed and heavenly --  it's the kind of wine we love to drink. Exquisitely fresh and silky, we find it totally irresistible. Weighing in at only 12.8% alcohol, it is delightfully buoyant and everything we've always loved about Arterberry Maresh Pinot noirs, and that is a lot, rolled into one.

More classically Dundee than the 2016, it's is pure red-fruited elegance. A slightly cooler vintage meant that Maresh was picked in October and any time that vineyard is picked in October, we start getting excited. Jim is really happy and really proud of this wine. And he damn well should be. - Marcus

2016 vintage notes

95 points Wine Spectator: "Impressive for the impeccable elegance and balance, and buoyed by a complex core, this offers vibrant rose petal and raspberry aromas and flavors of cherry, stony mineral and savory dried herb that unfurl toward polished tannins. Drink now through 2026."

96 points Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pinot Noir Old Vines has a lovely pure nose of pink peppercorn, dried black tea leaves, red and black licorice and violets with dried cranberries, red cherries and layers and layers of spice. Medium to full-bodied, it has amazing concentration of flavor in the mouth, blossoming out to pure red fruits and spicy layers, with cinnamon and autumn leaves accents, very fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity, finishing very, very long with tons of earth-laced fruit. Wow!"

The first ever bottling of Arterberry Maresh "Old Vines" is positively gorgeous! Breathtaking balance and purity, unlike anything we've seen from Jim Maresh since his epic 2010s.

I tasted the components of Old Vines in barrel during a chilly visit in late December '17; the finished wine shatters my expectations (which were high, by the way). Jim could not be more excited about his 2016s and based on Old Vines, we're right there with him. - Marcus

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We like to sell wines that we like to drink. We refer to taste the wines sell over several days; we want to know how a wine will evolve, how it pairs with food. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with guidance on how and when it'll be its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in ways that you can actually relate to. We battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We give you the unfiltered truth about a wine.We believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
