Martin Woods 2023 Single Vineyard Pinot 6-pack
Two bottles each 2023 Martin Woods Hyland, Bednarik, and Jessie James vineyard Pinot Noirs:
Hyland, 99 points Decanter, Pinot Noir of the vintage: "2023 is a dream come true, the wines come in at .2 to .4 % abv lower, with beautifully integrated tannin structure,’ says winemaker Evan Martin. A dazzling Pinot Noir from the Hyland Estate, this is brilliantly floral with spice and a beautiful elegance to the aromatics. There's a reductive earthiness. The soils are generous on the site, providing fuller canopies with medium-sized berries with a lower skin-to-juice ratio. This bottling is a Coury selection clone. Sweet florals, red fruits, and wonderful berries are on the nose, and there are mint leaves, earth, and savoury notes of lavender and lilac. It is so stunning and lingers long on the palate. It finishes with what Martin calls ‘a true ocean character,’ with brine, which lingers on the tip of the tongue. There's depth and breadth here that lingers long. The elegance and completeness of this Pinot Noir floor me."
Bednarik, 96 points Decanter: "Fast becoming a house favourite, the Bednarik, from 1988, is own-rooted Pommard and Wadenswil, 2/3 to 1/3, planted on marine sedimentary soils. In 2023, this was picked a month later than any other Martin Woods Pinots. On the palate, this is concentrated fleshy red fruits, cinnamon, clove, and allspice aromatics push, says Evan Martin. A long, resonating tannin structure and a smoky clove note interplay wonderfully with the ripe, fleshy fruits. Round and rich, beautifully juicy with pomegranate and red strawberries."
Jessie James, 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2023 Pinot Noir Jessie James Vineyard is exceptional and offers both finesse and power, reminiscent of Vosne-Romanée in style. Layered and complete with leather, ripe framboise, pressed herbs, mossy earth, and a mineral frame, it’s full-bodied, with refined tannins and stunning length. This is possibly the best wine I have tasted from Evan Martin Woods to date. Drink 2027-2050."
