94 points Wine Spectator: "Elegantly dynamic, this Cabernet shows depth and style, offering rose petal, black cherry and dusky spice flavors that glide toward refined tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Drink now through 2030. 750 cases made."
The ideal combination of muscle and elegance, borrowing from the Mandalorian, this is the (Betz) way. The texture—downright floatiness—is so inviting, especially for such a young Cab. Deep, velvety and so pure, Pere de Famille has firmly planted its flag as among the actual handful of top Washington Cabernets. Black cherries meet dark blue tones, violets, graphite, unsweetened chocolate, and I return to the way this moves so effortlessly; its fabulously integrated tannins woven into the sensual finish. So delicious already that it's impossible not to recommend opening a bottle now and savoring it over a day or three. On sheer balance alone it will age as long as you reasonably want it to but note, aging is not a requirement for enjoyment. Another incredible release from Betz! -Marcus
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Pere De Famille is another brilliant 2019 from this team. More blue fruits, flowers, violets, chocolate, and graphite notes all define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins, a terrific sense of finesse and elegant, and a great finish. This balanced, concentrated, incredibly impressive Cabernet Sauvignon will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and drink brilliantly over the following 15-20 years."
2014 vintage notes
97 points Wine Advocate: "A cellar selection from different sites in the Columbia Valley, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pere de Famille is deeper in color than the Clos de Betz and offers fabulous notes of crème de cassis, graphite, crushed flowers and violets. Just screaming Cabernet, it offers full-bodied richness, incredible purity of fruit, and ultra-fine tannin, all of which make for a sensational Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon that’s going to evolve for upwards of two decades.
One of the reference-point estates in Washington is unquestionably Betz Family Winery. Bob Betz still takes a leading role, but the day to day winemaking is more and more being taken up by Louis Skinner, who’s taken up the helm brilliantly. In 2015, the estate made use of an optical sorter to eliminate raisins, and the wines show more freshness and focus, with a touch less voluptuousness and breadth. The 2014s were sensational across the board. Anyone interested in Washington State wines, or just high-quality wines for that matter, owe it to themselves to try these!"
We had the distinct pleasure to taste the new 2014 Betz wines. Having tasted every vintage at release since 2002, we believe this to be the strongest and most attractive vintage we've tasted.
95 points Stephen Tanzer: "Discreet, very pure aromas of cassis and black cherry complicated by mineral, spice and floral nuances. Highly concentrated and savory, conveying a 3-D texture as well as terrific definition to its flavors of black cherry, saline minerality and dried herbs. Wonderfully elegant, energetic, flavorful wine with real eclat. Really saturates the palate with flavor without leaving any impression of weight."
2013 vintage notes
94 points Wine Advocate: "A cuvee that continues to become more and more Cabernet Sauvignon dominated (Bob Betz loves Cabernet and think it’s the top grape of Washington), the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pere de Famille (89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot) is utterly seamless and elegant. It is full-bodied and open, with forward notes of cassis, crushed flowers, red currants and licorice. Where the 2014s are more exuberant and dense, this 2013 excels on its pretty, pure and overall elegant style. Drink it anytime over the coming 15+ years. While there's a long history of terrific wines from this estate, I think they've hit another level in the past few vintages, and these latest releases show a purity, elegance and textural quality not found in early bottlings. I'm sure this is in part due to the creation of a second wine, and even a stricter selection for all of the top cuvees. In short, don't miss a chance to try these wines.
