In our recent scouting trip to Walla Walla, one wine was the unanimous winner as the most memorable of the trip, the total eye-opener.

Was it a Cabernet? Syrah? Red blend? No. It is a Walla Walla Merlot made by a Syrah master (about those Syrahs...you may want to check out the website now for early access to two 100-point Reynvaan 2021 Syrahs, but more on those soon...). And we agreed it is the most memorable bottle of Washington Merlot we have tasted in all of our combined years at Avalon. Read on, then add it to your collection. You'll be equally blown away.

What made it sear into our collective memory, what makes us salivate as we recall tasting it: everything about it. The deepest blue—blue plum sauce, the most perfect ripe blueberries—then add dollops of red and black fruits to enhance the flavor spectrum. Oh but it's so much more than the beautiful fruit! We got misty-eyed from the incredible combination of licorice, cinnamon, chocolate, dried herbs, and graphite. Without any desire to sound boastful, I recently had the very good fortune of sharing a bottle of Cheval Blanc for a friend's special birthday (first Sideways nod) and I am deadly serious that the Reynvaan's complexities reminded me of the Cheval Blanc's. That's big talk and it's true; the friend who shared the bottle of Cheval Blanc was also at Reynvaan with us and concurred.

If you can believe it, there's more. It's velvety, powerful, elegant, rich in texture—a wine that left us looking at each other with excitement and honestly, some disbelief. This is some serious f__ing Merlot (and second Sideways nod).

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.
