Us: The heart and soul of Walter Scott Pinot noir, the essence of their style, the "if-you're-going-to-buy-only-one-make-it-this" Pinot in the single vineyard lineup. There's volume without loudness, power with prettiness, more length and a sheer sense of completeness. A magnificent color palette of cool and warm tones paint a Pinot noir masterpiece. Walter Scott's Sojeau represents the "center cut" of the vineyard, a prime selection of clones and soils which bottles Sojeau's energy. -Marcus

Walter Scott: On the nose, Sojeau Pinot noir is bursting with inviting aromas of Amarena cherries, delicate violets, and smokey bacon. The palate is concentrated with sweet ripe strawberries and layered with the full spice cabinet of warm cardamon, Earl Grey team, cinnamon, white pepper, anise, and a gentle allure of sarsaparilla. With delicate yet gripping tannins that lead to a vibrant and intensely mineral finish, this wine consistently delivers a beautiful combination of power and sophistication.

2019 vintage notes

97 points Decanter, the highest scoring Oregon wine in their report!

2018 vintage notes

96 points Wine & Spirits Magazine: " It is a haunting wine, with scents of licorice, cinnamon, allspice and tea, all of it channeled through vibrant red-cherry and raspberry flavors, with a diaphanous tension and lightness that’s astonishing. Pahlow made some spectacular wines in 2018, and Sojeau may end up being the most complex and lasting. One taster named it Prince, for its binary sensuality, yin-and-yang expression of power and delicacy, its virtuoso fruit and its haunting savor."

2017 vintage notes

95 points PinotFile: "The aromas really draw you into the glass with a perfume of rose petal, muddled cherry, pomegranate and spice. Highly pleasurable from start to finish, offering mid weight flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and spice. Impeccable balance, with a dry, black cherry infused, bombastic finish. Wow!"

2015 vintage notes

A fantastic small vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, Sojourner ’15 enters the scene as a grand piano -- there are a few more notes to be struck in both the higher and lower register. Displaying an exuberant Oregon wild berry basket complemented by subtle spice and bold mineral accents, Sojo finishes focused and fresh with plenty more to give. An engaging drink already, better with two to four more years of age. 300 cases made. - Marcus

2014 vintage notes

93 points Wine Advocate: "The sophomore 2014 Sojourner Vineyard Pinot Noir from Eola-Amity comes from very rocky soils - two blocks and 13 rows picked at the same time. Picked at 4.5-tons per acre, it has a very precise bouquet with dark berries, undergrowth and black tea aromas that are nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, the 10% whole cluster fruit lending freshness and delineation. This is very harmonious - red segueing into black fruit towards the finish that lingers long in the mouth. Utterly superb."

2012 vintage notes

Darker and a touch mysterious, heaping buckets of dark cherries and a flash of blood orange and sweet cinnamon. Finishes with structure and rustic elegance. Only 125 cases made, and one of the finest expressions of Freedom Hill to date. Ken’s familiarity with the vineyard dates back well over a decade to his time at St. Innocent. - Marcus

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We like to sell wines that we like to drink. We refer to taste the wines sell over several days; we want to know how a wine will evolve, how it pairs with food. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with guidance on how and when it'll be its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in ways that you can actually relate to. We battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We give you the unfiltered truth about a wine.We believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
