I started writing a tasting note and then looked at winemaker Luisa Ponzi’s note. Whoa! I was compelled to include it: “This perfumed nose shows beautiful spice notes of black pepper, nutmeg and mesquite with floral aromas of lavender and dried rose petal. Ripe blueberry, raspberry and blackberry bramble mingle throughout. The mouth mimics the nose with spice notes, maple, black cherry reduction and dried sage. Chocolate nibs, malted milk and cinnamon frame the sweet mid palate, fresh with juicy acidity and finishing with lovely long, dusty tannins.”

Ponzi is under new ownership: Champagne house Bollinger recently purchased Ponzi which means soon, James Bond’s favorite Willamette Valley Pinot will be Ponzi (Bond fans will get this and others will scratch their heads…sorry, I’m obtuse). 

Laurelwood, one of the Willamette Valley’s newest growing areas, which Ponzi has long championed. Ponzi’s labels are undergoing a much needed makeover, which you’ll see on their 2019 Laurelwood Pinot noir.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.
