Maison Bleue Coureur des Bois 2013
We might not be able to pronounce it, but it took one pour for us to find this a fascinating and very tasty new wine from one of our favorite Washington Rhone masters. Opening with comforting aromas of licorice, ginger snaps, black currants and violets, this complex and unique blend is a cool mix of Mourvedre (40%), Syrah (40%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) in which each varietal contributes to the whole. Meaty and peppery notes, structure and balance, yummy black cherry and plum flavors. Best with a decant and right at home with a wide variety of foods, it will sing with five-spice seared duck breast.
Coureur des Bois is a French Canadian term meaning “woods runner.” These independent traders lived and traded with native people without the official permission from the French government of New France. This unique red wine blend, much like the renegade Coureur des Bois, tests the boundaries.
