New label, new flagship wine. That’s the meat and potatoes of Kiona’s outstanding Red Mountain Reserve, which put huge smiles on our faces over the course of several days tasting it. An easy-going expression of Red Mountain, meaning the tannins are considerably mellower than the reputation Red Mountain has rightfully earned. A lovely spectrum of plush fruit, more on the black side with red highlights, gains momentum and gravitas through the finish. We loved the duality of ripe and savory aspects at play. Despite its youth, don’t be afraid to pull the cork sooner. - Marcus
Made from 69% Heart of the Hill and 31% Kiona Estate, 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, 3% Carmenère, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec.
“The world’s finest wines are all a reflection of the areas from which they are grown. Origin and geography matter most when dictating what a finished bottle tastes like. More than winemakers, more than varietals, more than yeast or barrel or blending variables; wines taste like their place.
With that in mind (and because we are extremely well-positioned to build such a wine) we have put together a geographically-designated flagship product. This is the definitive wine of our vineyards, of our viticulture, of our plantings on Red Mountain.
It’s the answer to the question, what’s so special about Red Mountain?
In 1975 our family planted the first vineyard on Red Mountain, an area now known for producing some of the world’s most powerful, opulent wines of distinction. For three generations we’ve worked side-by-side, hand in hand to craft exciting, vineyard-driven wines that capture the essence of Red Mountain and specifically, our Heart of the Hill and Kiona Estate sites. It features exemplary Red Mountain fruit, acid, and structure. Oak is layered but not dominant, as food-pairability is paramount in our blending philosophy. The Reserve is a testament to our 40-year tradition.”
