With this unique Walla Walla red, we bid farewell to a longtime Avalon and club stalwart, Buty. Founded in 2000 by Nina Buty, their Cab Franc/Merlot blends were the first reds that caught our attention. Then the fabulous white Bordeaux blend they created. The accolades poured in from nearly every major wine publication.
More recently, once they established an estate vineyard in Walla Walla’s The Rocks District in 2008, their Rhone-style blends became co-captions of the Buty ship.
After their original winemaker left several years back, Chris Dowsett joined the Buty team. His name isn’t easily recognizable but we recall fondly that he created exceptional Mourvedre-based wines under his own Dowsett Family label; that’s a big reason we gravitated toward Buty’s Mourvedre-based Rockgarden Estate 2016.
The Rocks District’s cobblestones bring the wonderfully silky texture and the distinct salinity to match the pretty, floral, red fruited character. It is more about subtlety than power, which is typical of The Rocks District and of Buty. We hope you appreciate its elegance and Old World flair. Farewell, Buty!
