92 points Wine Enthusiast, Editors' Choice: "An aromatic tour de force, with appealing aromas of bay leaf, black cherry, smoked meat, blueberry, dark coffee, dried herb and spice showing complexity and detail. It's rich but well in-check, with focused fruit flavors following, supported by a tight coil of tannins. It's a classy, and classically Washington, wine that will only get better with a bit of time in the cellar or a short decant."

The uncommon story of Washington wine is as riveting as it is delicious. In the barren, windswept mountains of Eastern Washington where no one could imagine a world-class wine region, a close community of innovative farmers had a different vision.  They saw 300+ days of crystalline light, with hours of additional sunshine compared to its neighbors to the South…grapevine fuel for bold color, aroma, rich flavor and texture. The glacier-clad mountains to the West protected valleys of poor sandy soil from Pacific storms, creating a unique and harshly-dry locale at once well-drained and remarkably disease-resistant. The crisp, cool nights of this semi-arid region could preserve freshness in a way that was difficult to achieve in the New World.

There was a problem, however. Nothing was there. Little existed on those parched slopes besides tumbleweeds and craggy boulders. Undeterred, and contrary to sensible advice, these pioneers banded together and pushed the envelope of what was considered possible, let alone profitable. United by their common purpose and belief, they cleared sagebrush, dug through dry riverbeds, harnessed the mighty Columbia River and developed a spirit of camaraderie unseen amongst the well-known giants of the wine world.

Untold Story is our homage to these vinous trailblazers. It’s their spirit that drives us, their example of looking past what’s normal to find what might be possible. One of the most exciting cuvées that we blend each year, Untold Story incorporates a wider range of barrels and varietal combinations than any of our other wines. But the goal is simple: to make a wine that embodies Washington at its most delicious: vibrant fruit, mouthwatering freshness, beautiful texture and savory complexity.

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We don't like to sell wines that we don't like to drink. When we first taste a wine, we determine if it merits further attention. If so, we taste it later that day, perhaps pour a glass that night, then re-taste it over the course of several days. We want to know how a wine will evolve, or if it'll fall apart. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with a rough idea of when it'll be showing at its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in meaningful ways that you can actually relate to. We actively battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We work to give you the unfiltered truth about a wineWe believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
