Once again, Temperance Hill shines as the co-star of Walter Scott's 2021 Pinot noir lineup. Like previous vintages, it begins with a core of old vine ethereal elegance but from there, it radiates to further dimensions showing a profoundly pillowy texture we've never, ever tasted in any single Temperance Hill Pinot noir from any producer or vintage.

Supremely seductive in aromas and flavors—rubbed sage and lavender, huckleberries and super-pretty raspberries, this stretches from deep and cool to bright and vervy. The ultra-silky texture courtesy of vintage '21 adds to its subtly commanding presence.

Somehow I envision this as the molten essence of an exceptional Pinot noir vineyard Pinot noir—that's what I wrote in my handwritten notes and as esoteric as it might sound, I'm sticking to it. -Marcus

2015 vintage notes

96-97 points PinotFile: "I was at a loss of words in describing this joyful nose offering aromas of dark berries, spice and underbrush with a feral tone. One can really taste the Temperance Hill terroir in this wine, with its structured sense and its typically vigorous black cherry and black raspberry fruit flavors. The wine is in perfect harmony, with a silky mouthfeel, gracious acidity, fine-grain tannins, and a lasting finish. Still an overwhelming experience when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Pinot Noirs from this vineyard are consistently captivating."

Pure and pretty: prototypical Temperance Hill Pinot. Mouthwatering aromatics melding sweet, floral, and savory elements give way to elegant red and blue fruits. This wine is built for the cellar and will deliver an ethereal drinking experience in five to ten years. Only 100 cases made. - Marcus

2014 vintage notes

Our unanimous favorite of the line-up. This wine is gorgeous. Equal parts supple, concentrated, balanced, it's damn near perfect Pinot noir. Attractive fruit, complementary sweet, savory and spicy components. Production of Temperance doubled in 2014; still there were only 150 cases made. Buy it. A Reserve Pinot Noir Club selection. - Marcus

92 points Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Temperance Hill Pinot Noir, comes from a single acre planted in 1990 and apparently had so much fruit that they bought some fruit from the Pumphouse block. It has a sense of airiness on the nose, brambly red berry fruit, cold stone and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a little chalkiness on the entry with fine acidity and a very precise finish that lingers long in the mouth. Just a very classy Pinot Noir destined to age with style and panache."

Our Wine Advice

Life's too short to drink bad wine.

We taste as much or more Oregon wine in a given year than anyone on the planet. We look for the needles in the haystacks, the wines you won't find in your local wine store. Wineries have long sought our help to sell their most limited, unique bottlings.

We are picky. We like to sell wines that we like to drink. We refer to taste the wines sell over several days; we want to know how a wine will evolve, how it pairs with food. We want to know if it truly belongs in your cellar, in your glass, and we want to provide you with guidance on how and when it'll be its best.

Our goal is to describe wines in ways that you can actually relate to. We battle against overly flowery tasting notes. You know the kind. The ones that mention things that no one has ever smelled or tasted. They're mostly B.S. and they perpetuate snobbery that we don't like.

We give you the unfiltered truth about a wine.We believe wine isn't one-size-fits-all. We get to know your tastes and preferences so that we can recommend the right wines for you.

Avalon is a gem. The wine selection is both excellent and expertly curated. Better yet, Marcus and Andy invest the time to get to know their customers personally. So their recommendations fit you like a well-tailored suit (just more reasonably priced!).

Marcus and Andy's knowledge of the wines, wineries and winemakers of the area is encyclopedic and, in my experience, second to none. They have a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of the industry and a knack for recommending wines that are 'in my wheelhouse,' but also the insight to direct me toward new discoveries. I wholeheartedly recommend them to both those in the know and those who would
like to be.

Andy and Marcus only sell wines they would drink themselves, they sell them at reasonable prices, and they take exceptionally good care of their customers. Ethics, value, service…the reasons we buy all our wine from Avalon.

These guys do an outstanding job of sourcing great wines at terrific prices. Their reviews are fun to read and quite on point without all of the nonsense. Whose ever tasted squirrel dung or asphalt anyway? Get on their email list and savor the experience; then tell a friend. That's how I became a dedicated customer of Avalon Wine.
