You Have to Try These Magical 2019 Pinots

We've admired Will Hamilton's Violin Pinot noirs from the start. He is one of the most intuitive and frankly, best, Willamette Valley winemakers. Still, we weren't prepared for the impact of his 2019 Pinots—they left us in awe.

Tasting through a favorite winemaker's lineup of "reserve" wines from a given vintage, something will always rise to the top and conversely, one wine won't show as well as the others. Not Violin 2019s.

Within these four, microscopic-production wines you'll find both a candidate for wine of the vintage and the best sub-$40 Willamette Valley Pinot we have for sale. Oh, and the other two are breathtaking single vineyards so magically charming that we're still in awe two weeks after tasting them.

How best to proceed, to share these magical Pinots? We created an equally weighted Violin 2019 Pinot case—3 bottles each—so that you can experience each one now and in the future. And we've upped the discount on the mixed case to 15% because you have to try them. We know people have favorites and budgets so you can also buy them individually and/or in larger quantities. Whichever strategy you pick, it is our firm belief and expert opinion that you will not find a stronger lineup from the classic 2019 Willamette Valley vintage. Hurry.

Us: Something magical happened here—usually, vineyards are fermented separately and blended afterward. In Violin's Polk County 2019, two exquisite vineyards (Justice and Lewman) were co-fermented, then blended with one of our favorites, Sojeau. The process brought out all the strengths of each vineyard into one magical whole, a complete package of Pinot noir. Bright red and sexy, a huge succulent mouthful of delicious fruit, quiet power and undeniable elegance. Confidently stated: the best sub-$40 Willamette Valley Pinot noir available.

Winemaker Will: For my palate, the most elegant wine of the vintage. A co-fermentation of Justice and Lewman produced four barrels, plus two barrels from Sojeau. Striking dark cherry against lavender, rose petal and bramble. Laser focus on entry, with freshness and exuberance guiding the palate. The concentration and power of Sojeau provides lovely framework for the ethereal fruit core of Justice/Lewman, and together form the sort of taught and mouthwatering package that makes Pinot noir such a pleasure to savor and drink.

Us: By a wide and clear margin, our favorite Pinot noir that's come from Justice grapes. A purity and intensity of aromatics ushers you to a first sip of this magically-textured masterpiece. Creamy and mouth-coating are exactly right yet it floats gracefully and moves harmoniously from bright beginning to exceptionally lengthy finish.

Winemaker Will: High-toned aromatic power, dusty red cherry, turned earth, sage, flower petal and warm spices in the nose. Juicy and bright entry fills immediately to mouth-coating, supple tannins—the creamiest we have found in a Justice bottling. The finish is crisp and pure, the spiced fruits carrying the wine beautifully against perfectly balanced acidity.

Us: A candidate for wine of the vintage. The kind of wine you want to smell for days; if they made a cologne from it, we'd wear it. But holy ____ is it more than just that: exotic, heady aromas, a huge dark cherry heart of fruit, tons of complexity throughout, pure silk texture and minutes-long length. Only 40 total cases produced, this is highly limited with a good chunk reserved for the Violin Magic Cases and our end of year Collector's Cases.

Winemaker Will: The First and only bottling from this small parcel, a wine I continue to describe as the most expressive I have produced under Violin. An exotic medley of berry fruits, dark cherry, and an array of savory tones with incredible drive. The palate shows intensity and elegance at once—seamless tannins, plump and juicy yet restrained. Finessed, fine, but full of flair. A fittingly beautiful, pure and lively expression for the final season of Dennis Lewman.

Us: In addition to loving Will's 2019 wines, I'll say definitively that his tasting notes for the '19s are the best winemaker notes I've read in years. So descriptive, a perfect match of head and heart. I can't match his Sojeau note other than to say, "yes."

Winemaker Will: Unmistakably pure aromatic profile of dark cherry and crushed berries, the power and focus of the aromatic tone is captivating. The “Sojeauness” is all there; the density and drive producing positive and mouthwatering energy across the palate. The persistence and integration of tannin in 2019 is simply astonishing—the pull of the wines goes endlessly, with a plush and generous weight perfectly matched by the strength of the frame. Tension in wine is hard to describe, but I think we have captured it here.

Us: The Chardonnay counterpoint to Sojeau Pinot noir, demonstrating the power and elegance of Sojeau...and once again, Will's great notes!

Winemaker Will: Picked on my son’s birthday, September 21st, the Autumnal equinox, Sojeau Chard got the vintage started. Full of tension in the nose and on the palate, Sojeau Chardonnay has a long life of unravelling ahead. Intense aromatic pop, almost a spicy quality, with lemon oil, pineapple, orchard fruits and floral accents all competing. The wine sheds layers in the glass to reveal new details, from the more overt and cool fruits to savory, baked cakes and breads, back to austere tones with salty lime edges. The compact palate delivers a tense core, with finely balanced acidity in perfect balance to create “tug” and length. This is dense and concentrated wine for such moderate alcohol, with phenolic structure adding persistence that carries the citrus twist and laser focus on and on and on and on and on…..and then the bottle disappears. Graceful and powerful at once.
