Wines from Wonderful Human Beings: Hundred Suns

Hundred Suns epitomizes the Willamette Valley micro-winery, a family project where everything is done by hand, where the wines feel like they were created just for you. The relentlessly creative, exploratory mind responsible for the delicious wines that flow Hundred Suns is Grant Coulter.

After nine excellent years at Beaux Freres, where among other achievements he made the #3 wine in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2016, Grant left to become the winemaker for Flaneur and to launch Hundred Suns with his wonderful partner, Renee Saint-Amour.

We love Grant, as a winemaker and as a wonderful human being. If that sounds all warm and fuzzy, good–we mean it that way. Grant’s wines have the feel of something deeply personal and philosophical because that’s entirely his intention. Now more than ever, we need that; it's the personal connections we have to wine and to each other which make the days more fulfilling.

We encourage you to read our brand new article on Grant below–an example of what sets us apart from most wine purveyors–and we strongly encourage you to get behind the 2018 Hundred Suns Pinot noirs. You'll find colors, textures, and dimensions that speak to you. Their newest wine, Breaker, is a masterpiece.

A masterpiece. Pure energy. In stereo. The maximum color palette, mixing reds and blues and blacks, creating a landscape of depth and dimension. - Marcus

“One of the most distinctive wines I’ve ever made. It’s an incredible expression of Willamette Valley fruit, love it or hate it,” Grant joked. We love it! And truthfully, we’re not sure anyone could hate it.

Grant continued, excitedly, "Whenever we pour it for people their heads snap back, like ‘what is this?!, its crazy!’ But they really seem to gravitate towards it.” I told Grant that my bottle was finished on day five and it was still fresh and exciting. “Oh yeah, it stays drinkable for 7-8 days open and should age for a long time. I bottled a bunch of magnums; I want my kids to be drinking this 20 years from now, which isn’t to say it isn’t guzzle-able now!”

Grant and Renee purchased their home vineyard, the tiny 3-acre Breaker, in 2018. Read more about it below!

Oooooh yeah! A huge mouthful of flavor, round and juicy, with silkiness abounding. Gobs of crushed berries, hints of mint and whole cluster savory deliciousness, with a saline lift on the finish.

An impressive quartet of vineyards, each with its own single vineyard bottling -- Breaker, Shea, Sequitur, Bednarik -- forms this tremendous value. The 2018 is the strongest showing yet for this blend. You will not find a better, more action-packed $30 Pinot from our fair state.

A symphonic spectrum of beautiful reds, showing old-vine elegance and class. Brushstrokes of bright tones over a savory foundation kept us enthralled through the sweetly-fruited yet wonderfully cool finish. Speaking of cool, Bednarik is a small, 6-acre vineyard in the Coast Range with old vines, planted to Pommard and Wadenswil clones in 1988.

From Beaux Freres' co-founder Mike Etzel's magically-farmed Sequitur Vineyard, is decadently velvety richness held in check by a bright streak, mixing purples and blues, a floral brilliance, and comforting sweet spice. Total yum. - Marcus

This year’s exploration of the Sequitur Vineyard yielded a unique 5-barrel composition. The majority of this bottling was a union of a secret suitcase clone and the Chalone clone fermented together, 35% whole bunch. The other portion came from a single tank of untouched whole cluster Pinot that was left to ferment for 20 days. Rich cocoa-laced plum meets brambly blue fruit with a pop of bubble gum. Naturally fermented using partial whole cluster, this wine presents the best of Ribbon Ridge but with an independent streak. - Grant

A portrait of harnessed power, blending two distinct fermentation lots together, each one bringing its attractive share. Fragrant and spicy, broad and svelte, a fascinating Shea Vineyard Pinot noir that tames some of Shea's dark power while maintaining its intensity. Sound intriguing? It sure is. - Marcus

The 2018 vintage gave us lower yields, but the generous sunshine perfectly and evenly ripened our small block of Shea. Picked on the 29th of September, the grapes were separated into two lots: one 50% whole bunch and the other completely de-stemmed. Blended together, these two lots express vivid, fresh red fruit, silky textures, and unique layers of warm baking spices. - Grant
