We were reading Wine Spectator reviews for Cabs and red blends from our neighbor to the south, seeing scores in the low-to-mid 90s and prices way above $100. We know it's not apples to apples but still, it put the spotlight back on the dynamite value that Washington red wine represents.
We've picked three of our recent favorites to highlight the awesome juice Washington has to offer. We love our Cabs, Merlots, and Cab Francs but often, the best wines are a result of creating the perfect blend. Guardian, Cadence, and Buty have done it! Guardian Gun Metal 2016
$39.55 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order
93 points Wine Spectator:"Expressive and sleekly multilayered, with vibrant blackberry, espresso and tea flavors that take on richness toward polished tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot."
Us: One thing we've always loved about Gun Metal is its approachability; the '16 is already in full stride. Hitting right out of the gate with impressive intensity and heady aromas of sweet black cherries and mocha, it's creamy, suave black fruit carries through a cool note of licorice and cedar as the whole wine persists and echos, from smell to taste and back.
93 points Wine Spectator:"Polished and refined, with vibrant cherry and blueberry flavors accented by licorice notes, building complexity toward fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot."
Us: The Bordeaux-like stylings of Cadence wines light us up -- this blend is a prime example of why with its perfect black and purple fruits, tobacco and Red Mountain minerals. You can always count on Cadence to deliver freshness and wonderful balance.
$40.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($44.95 regular)
93 points Wine Spectator:"Expressive and well-built, with red currant and mocha aromas leading to a structured core wrapped in supple black cherry and spice flavors that linger on the long finish."
Us: Without question one of the best vineyards from which to create an exceptional Merlot/Cab Franc blend, which Buty has been doing for many years. We love the silky, spicy dark red fruits and chocolate covered cherry accents.
