The Oregon Phenomenon: Walter Scott 2016 Single Vineyards

How do we write about the incredible phenomenon that is Walter Scott? For three years running we've referred to them as Oregon's hottest winery. Yet somehow they've gotten hotter. Every major wine critic sings their praises but it is so much more than that: they've won so many hearts with their story and so many tastebuds with their wines. We've never seen an Oregon winery blossom in the way Walter Scott continues to.

We don't need to exaggerate; we'll let the facts speak for us. More than half their 2016 single vineyard production sold out before release. We'll not have the luxury of waiting a few months for reviews or for anything!

Because of our early and vociferous support for Walter Scott wines, we're the first wine shop in the country to offer the 2016s. The wines are exceptional and we urge you to pounce on them now, as you'll not likely have a second chance.

Walter Scott Temperance Hill Pinot noir 2016
$49.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($54.95 regular)
How do you pick a favorite? The oldest vines in the cellar produced the most compelling wine in the cellar. Aromatically almost naughty -- it just smells so good! Rosemary blossom accents mouthwatering crushed raspberry, all woven together with Temperance Hill's signature indescribable complexity. Wonderfully elegant while also superbly dense, it is this tension that makes this wine, Walter Scott, and Pinot noir shine. Only 125 cases made, of which 35 are available.

The wine that got them into IPNC this year, Temperance Hill also produced the best barrel in the cellar, some of which was bottled specially for the Willamette Valley Barrel Auction. - Marcus

Walter Scott Seven Springs Pinot noir 2016
$58.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($64.95 regular)
Deeper aromas than the rest of the wines, this expresses itself as its own animal. It is classic Seven Springs, sexy and subtly spicy with awesome depth and complexity. Floral-accented wild berries carry through with beautiful persistence and energy but it's really that texture that sets this wine apart: right when opened, a super-fine almost crispness which turns to pure silk, elongating the finish that highlights fruit purity and savory tones. 225 cases made of which 40 are available. - Marcus

Walter Scott Dubay Pinot noir 2016
$49.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($54.95 regular)
There were only three barrels of Dubay and not at all surprisingly, it was very well received and sold out at the winery before release. Never fear, we reserved a small parcel as futures but it will sell out today. Perfumed, fresh and floral on the nose but much more powerful and structured on the palate, yet with excellent inner sweetness. I love how this developed as it opened, picking up a lovely orange top note on the supremely long finish. 75 cases made of which 6 are available. - Marcus

Walter Scott Sojourner Pinot noir 2016
$49.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($54.95 regular)
Exuberantly, expressively pretty, displaying a freshness and precision we immediately fell for. There's an exceptional coolness to the Oregon wild red berry basket accented by delicate spice and  mineral accents. Possessing great drive, pulsing forward with verve and structure. I will love seeing how this evolves in the cellar; I expect it will be magic. - Marcus

Walter Scott Freedom Hill Pinot noir 2016
$49.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($54.95 regular)
The best Freedom Hill Pinot noir I've tasted, going back at least 17 vintages. It's because Ken coaxed the softer side from the vineyard, proving in the process that there is one! Still on the more powerful side, sporting blue and black fruits, violets, and super-fine tannin that helps frame the finish and echo flavor. - Marcus

Walter Scott Cuvee Anne Chardonnay 2016

$35.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($39.95 regular)
This reserve blend represents Ken and Erica's vision of Oregon Chardonnay. We love their vision. To us, this represents the perfect mid-point between the single vineyard Chardonnays: fantastic fruit and weight, enlivened by mouthwatering acidity and lingering minerality. A Chardonnay for all occasions, whether sitting on the couch eating popcorn in front of a fire (me, Sunday), prepping dinner, or pairing with roasted chicken. - Marcus

Walter Scott Freedom Hill Chardonnay 2016

$49.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($54.95 regular)
Whereas Freedom Hill produces structured and bold Pinots, its Chardonnay (in the magic hands of Ken) yields superb delicacy, seashell salinity and minerality to partner with juicy lime and Meyer lemon aromas and flavors, with soft fennel pollen flourishes. - Marcus

Walter Scott X Novo Chardonnay 2016

$58.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($64.95 regular)
A distinct and beautifully textured Chardonnay, mixing mango and sweet tangerine with plump summer peach which adds an exotic pinch of lemongrass. X Novo Vineyard is owned by Craig Williams, who spent 32 years at Joseph Phelps. The Chardonnay plantings are some of the most exciting and diverse on the West Coast, comprised of no less than fifteen clones. - Marcus

Support in the Oregon wine business is a two-way street. We're deeply grateful to the Walter Scott team for believing in us as much as we believe in them. You won't find a harder-working team in the wine biz, anywhere. Congratulations to Ken, Erica, Lucy, Jess, Andy, and Sue for all that you've achieved!

We're looking forward to helping you with an order. Thank you so much for supporting Oregon wine and for supporting us!

Marcus and Andy
