Sunny-Eyed and Smiley: New Wonderful White Wines

We are feeling spring-y: more daylight, a forecast for almost 70 today, and a lot of cross-country wine shipping now that the cold parts have thawed. Besides those classic spring markers, the arrival of today's wonderful white wines has us sunny-eyed and smiley. Patricia Green Cellars' brand new 2021 Willamette Valley Sauv Blanc is outrageously yummy; The Walls' ode to Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc, Lip Stinger 2020, is a serious wine not meant to be taken too seriously. When you think "great Oregon and Washington white wine" we want you thinking of these.
We highly recommend both for your spring (and summer, and fall) enjoyment!

Us: It seems like forever since we've had this legendary Willamette Valley white wine in stock so maybe that accounts for how much we love the 2021 or is just this brilliant! The queen of WV Sauv Blanc. The gorgeous weight is enough to win you over—so much beautiful fruit yet so much mouthwatering verve. Yum, yum, and YUM.

We love the winery's note: This is classic Sauvignon Blanc provided you do not think this variety should smell like cut grass and cat pee. This has high-toned and heavily fruited aromatics along with the tinge of straw and minerals—what ripe Sauvignon Blanc should have. The strength of the aromatics resounds in the glass as the wine is deeply fruited with citrus notes at the entry giving way to tropical fruit with extremely crisp acidity on the finish. Bright and fresh but retaining an enormous amount of texture and richness without being heavy or taking away from its “summertime drinking” sort of nature. This will pair easily with a very wide range of food ranging from summer salads to denser white fish, sushi rolls and nigiri to spicier Asian-influenced dishes, risottos with summer vegetables to chicken and pork done on the grill (and while grilling).

When you think "Chateauneuf du Pape" you think red, and rightly so; over 90% of Chateauneuf's production is red wine. But to discover the elusive, luxurious Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is to experience a white wine like few others.

It's precisely that "ah-hah!" moment that master winemaker Todd Alexander captures in Lip Stinger, his ode to the commanding white wines from the Southern Rhone.

Fabulous richness and luscious texture meets buoyant freshness and vibrant acidity to make a glassful of serious white wine...not meant to be taken too seriously. An excellent food wine, pairing with everything from cheeses to seared tuna, equally adept and downright delicious to quaff on the deck. 58% Grenache Blanc, 23% Roussanne, 7% Marsanne, 5% Viognier, 4% Clairette Blanche, 3% Picpoul.
