Stunning, Compelling, Surprising: "Off the Grid" Oregon White Wines

Some days in the wine world are full of the best surprises. Two unplanned wine visitors changed the course of our email offering with their sensational, slightly "off the grid" treats.

Ovum is one of the brightest rising stars in American winemaking -- whether or not you're a fan of Gewurztraminer, Love Me or Leave Me is simply stunning. Equally compelling for any Riesling fan is their remotely-sourced Off the Grid. The unexpected surprise of the day was Cooper Mountain's Tocai Friulano, a superb white for any season. This standout trio deserves your attention.

Stunning juice
Ovum Love Me or Leave Me Gewurztraminer 2015

$22.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($24.95 regular

The best domestic Gewurztraminer I've tasted, this stunning wine transcends the confines of the grape. Here, the typical spice, rosewater and lychee notes of Gewurztraminer act as accents to the rich texture and beautiful acidity that drive the wine. From vines plated in 1976 in the Rogue Valley's Gerber Vineyard. - Marcus

Incredibly high praise from the well-respected publication View from the Cellar by John Gilman: "On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and nascently complex, with an excellent core of fruit, bright acids, lovely focus and grip and a very long... finish. The seven grams of residual sugar simply buffer the acidity here seamlessly and the overall impression is of a bone dry wine. This reminds me a lot of a top young vintage of Trimbach Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre, which is about as high praise as I can offer for young gewürztraminer! Excellent juice. 2016-2030+. 93 points."

A Riesling for everyone
Ovum Off the Grid Riesling 2015

$22.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($24.95 regular

From what may be the most remote and isolated vineyard in the Pacific Northwest comes an exquisite Riesling. Off the Grid Vineyard, 25 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean near the Oregon-California border, sits at an elevation of 1500 feet and is planted on a dried riverbed; the vines struggle in the rocky soils and very cool microclimate.

Our favorite Riesling of the new Ovum releases finds the bullseye: beautifully lifted aromas, a super lively palate of lime, white peach, apricot, and a ribbon of minerality that engages you from nose to finish. Like its vineyard location, this is on the border of dry and slightly off-dry and because of the exquisite balancing acidity, finishes closer to the former. Drink now or age for a decade. - Marcus and Andy (For those interested, Gilman gave it 92 points.)

With or without food (sing it)
Cooper Mountain Tocai Friulano 2015

$17.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($19.95 regular

Tocai Friulano, cousin to the much more prolific Sauvignon Blanc, is the dominant white grape in the Friuli region of northeastern Italy. With a richness between Sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay, this makes an equally engaging sipper before dinner and a partner to seafood (think fish or shellfish curry). Brightly aromatic, wafting with citrus, peach and minerals, it picks up lovely notes of honeyed melon through the fresh finish.

Cooper Mountain's incredibly rare, 2.5-acre planting dates back to 2004.
