We're feeling celebratory around here. The Cubs won it all (Andy's a lifelong fan) and we have a new favorite Oregon sparkling wine!
We've long held the belief that sparkling wine isn't only for celebrations, but it sure puts the exclamation point on a special occasion. Our friend Bobby Rowett and his upstart winery, Mellen Meyer, focus on sparkling wine, a rarity for the Willamette Valley. He strolled into the shop and rocked us with the quality and price of his Willamette Valley Brut.
$31.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($34.95 regular)
A breath of fresh air in the Oregon sparkling wine scene. Beautifully clean and refreshing, with superb balance and persistence to the citrus and green apple notes, accented by brioche and clove. The finish strikes a harmoniously zesty chord. 65% Pinot noir and 35% Chardonnay, from Johan Vineyard, mostly a blend from 2013 and 2014. His "workhorse" production wine, only a whopping 315 cases were made. Great with a wide range of foods and on its own.
It takes a ton of dedication to be a young producer with a sparkling wine focus. It's labor intensive, expensive, and time consuming; this wine is three years in the making.
We got to know Bobby when he was assistant winemaker at Matello/Goodfellow Family Cellars and think he has what it takes. - Marcus
