We'll let you in on a secret: in the recent Vinous report on Oregon Pinot noir -- the one with an unprecedented number of 95 points wines from a publication we respect -- our favorite 95-pointer also happened to be the least expensive. If you called and talked to us, we let the cat out and today, it's time to do so more publicly.
Cristom Estate 2014 is one of the most balanced, finesse-driven '14s, harnessing the power of the vintage in a way few wines did. It's Vinous' only 95-point Pinot with a price tag under $50. We love it and we're convinced you will, too. Cristom Estate Pinot noir 2014

95 points Vinous:"Suave, smoke-accented aromas of raspberry preserves, pungent flowers, incense and cola, along with a hint of allspice in the background. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering intense red berry, allspice and floral pastille flavors that are sharpened by a jolt of zesty acidity. Shows superb clarity and spicy bite on a long, penetrating finish shaped by silky, even tannins. The interplay of power and finesse here is really something." - Josh Raynolds
Only the second vintage of Cristom's "Estate," in our esteem, the Estate is equal to or greater than the Cristom's single vineyards. It makes sense how much we like it: the last several vintages, we've preferred Eileen and while we really liked Louise and Jessie, too, they've seemed like they weren't as complete as they could be. For us, Estate is the missing part of the equation. Eileen makes up the backbone (it is the largest of the 4 vineyards) with the perfect contributions from Louise, Jessie, and even Marjorie.
Winemaker-guru Steve Doerner described it as "a great representation of the whole site; a delicate balance between making the best single vineyards while also making the best representation of the entire estate."

Some wines speak to the past, some are here and now, others offer glimpses at how the Willamette Valley might evolve. Only one winery encompasses it all–storied past, delicious present, thrilling future: Eyrie.
