One of the World's Greatest Wineries: Cavallotto

Cavallotto is undeniably one of Italy's, and one of the world's, greatest wineries. Anyone who disagrees is a) itching for a fight and b) wrong!

Special occasions for Andy and me invariably involve Cavallotto wines; they are always up to the task. We've tasted the current line-up more than a couple times, including then-unlabeled 2012 Barolo Riservas at the winery in September. You can follow our recommendations, the small representation of glowing reviews Cavallotto receives, go to Barolo and taste for yourself -- whichever combo of options gets you there, get these wines.

Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 2015
$67.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order
($74.95 regular)
96 points Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Barolo Bricco Boschis shows extreme elegance and finesse. These are the characteristics of what is surely one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in Barolo. The Bricco Boschis cru affords a panoramic view onto much of the Langhe, with snowcapped Alps in the background. Barolo from Castiglione Falletto tends to show characteristics that are very fine, precise and linear. That's fundamentally what you get here despite the more exuberant and fleshy 2015 vintage. This wine is truly beautiful."
Us: When tasting through Cavallotto's wines, a person can run out of superlatives quickly. Laden with powerful, silky fruit, it's already as attractive as young Barolo can be without sacrificing the classic house style and age-worthiness. - M

Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2016
$33.25 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($36.95 regular)
92+ points Wine Advocate: "This wine shows deep, lasting and increased aromatic intensity that really points to the quality levels achieved with Nebbiolo in 2016. Bottle production of this wine is greatly reduced because more fruit was moved up to the production of top-shelf Barolo instead. The wine is compact, firm and tight, but it also offers lots of inner energy and brightness.
Us: Well...I already have a 6-pack in my cellar (make that 5. Baby Barolo, from the monumental 2016 vintage ("nearly perfect for Nebbiolo" according to Cavallotto). The breadth and power of Nebbiolo marries with texture, freshness and sweetness for earlier drinking. Load up. - M

Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vigna San Giuseppe 2012
$125.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($139.95 regular)
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Enticingly fragrant, this gorgeous wine opens with classic Nebbiolo aromas of woodland berry, wild rose, forest floor, pipe tobacco, dark spice and a balsamic whiff of menthol. Reflecting the nose, the delicious, structured palate delivers dried cherry, raspberry compote, truffle, star anise and a note of crushed mint. Firm but noble tannins provide the framework and bestow impressive aging potential. Drink 2022-2037."
Us: A little shy at first and then WOW, super-fragrant, sublimely balanced -- "young Barolo Riserva can't possibly be this good" is exactly what my tasting note reads. (Quint)Essential Barolo, and truly the wine for kings! - M

Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo 2012
$116.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($129.95 regular)
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Pressed rose, sun-baked earth, aromatic herb, new leather, balsamic notes and a whiff of game are just some of the aromas you'll find on this multifaceted red. The full-bodied palate boasts structure and personality, delivering dried Marasca cherry, blood orange, star anise and tobacco set against a backbone of firm noble tannins. Drink 2022-2032."
Us: Tasted thrice already, Vignolo follows its tradition of showing the more immediately expressive side of Cavallotto Riservas. The '12 Vigno is beautiful, deep, and a must-have for Barolo fans. - M

Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Vigna del Cuculo 2016
$33.25 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($36.95 regular)
You might tire of hearing about how incredible Piedmont 2016s are but you'll forgive us as soon as you start drinking the wines. Long our gold standard for Barbera, in a league with less than a handful of peers, the '16 is even more perfect than normal! So bright and fresh from the vintage, pure elegance from start to finish. If Barolo and Barbera had a lovechild, this would be it. - M

Cavallotto Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna Scot 2017
$17.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($19.95 regular)
Cavallotto is Piedmont royalty. Their Dolcetto is like everything they make: traditional in style, exquisite in balance. The Piemontese drink tons of Dolcetto -- it is super food-friendly and great to sip on its own. - M
