Just In: Massive Reviews for Walter Scott Chards

Huge, scratch that massive new reviews just out from The Wine Advocate for some of our favorite Willamette Valley wineries. You will see many more from us soon but let's start this party off the right way with three Walter Scott Chardonnays: the 98-point Freedom Hill Vineyard, 97-point Cuvée Anne 2019 and the 94-point Bois-Moi 2020. If you want to know what Willamette Valley Chard tastes like, you can do no better than Walter Scott.

98 points Wine Advocate: "Weightless power is what defines the 2019 Chardonnay Freedom Hill Vineyard. It offers textural breadth, expansive flavors and incredible length, with singular aromas combining pure citrus with youthful flintiness. The palate swells with salty, limey tang before fleshing out to savory nutty tones, and the finish just goes on and on. This pure, singular expression is compelling, even at this early stage, and will offer more with time in the cellar."

Us: Racy! Lemon-lime big time. Whereas Freedom Hill produces structured and bold Pinots, its Chardonnay yields delicacy with excellent, persistent minerality.

$35.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case order ($39.95 regular)

97 points Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Chardonnay Cuvée Anne comes from several vineyards, including X Novo, Justice and Seven Springs, and matured in about 45% new wood. It has alluring scents of preserved lemon, saline and graphite, with perfumed white orchard fruits. The palate is linear and pure, with a satiny texture and gentle nutty character at this early stage. Its elevated length and purity suggest this has much more to offer with additional time in bottle."

Us: This reserve blend represents Ken and Erica's vision of Oregon Chardonnay; they are among a handful of Oregon producers driving the Chardonnay conversation. Cuvée Anne is a tribute to Erica (Anne is her middle name). When Ken met Erica, he had wine in barrel but says he’d still be fumbling around if Erica hadn’t “pushed him off the ledge” into full-time winemaking.

$24.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case order ($27.95 regular)

94 points Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Chardonnay Bois-Moi opens with flinty tones that give way to plush yellow orchard fruits and wafts of beeswax. Medium-bodied, it has broad, honeyed fruits enlivened by bright acidity, and there's a touch of texture that lengthens the finish.

Us: Walter Scott made only two Chardonnays in 2020: eight barrels of Freedom Hill and Bois-Moi (which means drink me). All of the other juice that’s normally destined for exquisite single vineyard Chards is in here. That alone makes this a new discovery in value terms but then you sink into it and...sploosh! Like a waterslide of aromas and flavors, the whole wine slides down so easily because of the beautiful texture. Bois-Moi now!
