Italy Planning, Dreaming, Sipping: Marcus Picks

Ciao Italian wine fans!

I'm planning (and daydreaming about) my September trip to Piedmont and Tuscany and lining up priority visits. At the top of both lists: Piancornello in Montalcino and Paitin in Barbaresco.

Piancornello made one of the Brunellos of the 2013 vintage -- our special pre-arrival price ends tomorrow. And if you've ever (ever) found yourself enjoying Barbaresco or its sibling, Barolo, I strongly encourage you to add some Paitin Serraboella '14 to your stash. It's beautiful!

Piancornello Brunello di Montalcino 2013
$49.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($54.95 regular)
A newer discovery for me, Piancornello's style represents everything I love about Sangiovese. Their '13 Brunello is a classic in the making, from the winery's certified organic estate. I'm as excited for this to be in my cellar as I am to navigate Piancornello's driveway for the first time.
96 points Vinous: "One of the Brunellos of the vintage. Highly perfumed, mineral aromas of raspberry, red cherry, violet and iron. Wonderfully sappy but youthfully imploded in the mouth, this remarkably precise and well-delineated Brunello offers an extremely refined set of flinty red and black fruit herbal flavors. Finishes with a firm edge of tannins and very good floral and spicy lift. An outstanding, very pure and deep wine that really needs about a decade of patience." Arriving August 2018.

Paitin Barbaresco Serraboella 2014
$32.35 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order
($35.95 regular)
This Barbaresco is incredible! While I'm never hesitant to open young Barbaresco, this is particularly showy, even without decanting. The most beautiful red fruit and floral elements flow together in an undeniably attractive way. Silky up front with super-fine tannin towards the finish, I personally think the score below is on the low side. Highly recommended, by me.
92 points Wine Spectator: "Currant, strawberry, cherry, floral and leafy flavors are the highlights of this racy, elegant red. Balanced on the firm side, with excellent length. Best from 2020 through 2032."
