Impressing EVERYONE: Walter Scott 2015s

We have the best jobs on the planet.

I thought that all weekend as I "worked" on tasting notes for the brand new single vineyard Walter Scott releases. To have the honor to taste all eight wines before release and to share our favorites with you -- it doesn't get any better.

But, amazingly, you know what does keep getting better? Walter Scott Pinot noirs and Chardonnays! In our expert opinion, Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon's Walter Scott Wines is the hottest Oregon winery right now. Everyone's talking about them, for very good reasons. Their star has risen meteorically; they've impressed every major wine critic and industry veteran while remaining true to their vision and to themselves. We're fortunate to offer this incredible line up before the rest of the world sees them.

Walter Scott Dubay Pinot noir 2015
$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order

($49.95 regular)

The debut of Dubay is flat-out awesome! If forced to choose, it's my favorite of the 2015 single vineyards (along with Seven Springs). Bursting with energy and dark berry wildness, wrapped in a sophisticated shell. Beautifully layered, adding hints of blood orange -- my favorite winter citrus that's the perfect balance of juicy, sweet, and bitter -- this is surprisingly showy already yet will have a solid decade or more of longevity. As Ken and Erica say, this wine is NUTTY good! Only 125 cases made. A March Reserve Pinot Noir Club selection.

Dubay Vineyard is a crazy, steep, rocky site in the Eola-Amity Hills, farmed by master viticulturist Ryan Hannaford (you may recognize his name from Lingua Franca's Ryan Plow). - Marcus

Walter Scott Seven Springs Pinot noir 2015
$58.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order

($64.95 regular)

The other favorite 2015 is a magnificent Pinot noir which shows the depth, character, and elegant power of old vines, from 1983 plantings in the iconic Seven Springs Vineyard. Beginning on the purple end of the spectrum with violet, dark berry and spice aromas, turning beautifully, delectably red on the palate with mixed cherries and raspberries, delicate spice and floral accents, and a can't-describe complexity that'll keep you transfixed. Only 125 cases made -- very limited. - M

Walter Scott Sojourner Pinot noir 2015

$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($49.95 regular)

A fantastic small vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, Sojourner '15 enters the scene as a grand piano -- there are a few more notes to be struck in both the higher and lower registers. Displaying an exuberant Oregon wild berry basket complemented by subtle spice and bold mineral accents, Sojo finishes focused and fresh with plenty more to give. An engaging drink already, better with two to four more years of age. 300 cases made. - M

Walter Scott Clos des Oiseaux Pinot noir 2015

$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($49.95 regular)

A more opulent expression of Walter Scott Pinot noir, the 2015 shows lush aromas mixed red fruits, Asian spices and background notes of sweet oak. Beaming with red berries and cherries, it displays both power and precision. 275 cases made. - M

Walter Scott Temperance Hill Pinot noir 2015

$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($49.95 regular)

Pure and pretty: prototypical Temperance Hill Pinot. Mouthwatering aromatics melding sweet, floral, and savory elements give way to elegant red and blue fruits. This wine is built for the cellar and will deliver an ethereal drinking experience in five to ten years. 100 cases made. - M

Walter Scott Cuvee Anne Chardonnay 2015
$35.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order

($39.95 regular)

This reserve blend represents Ken and Erica's vision of Oregon Chardonnay. We love their vision. To us, this represents the perfect mid-point between the single vineyard Chardonnays: fantastic fruit and weight, enlivened by mouthwatering acidity and lingering minerality. A Chardonnay for all occasions, whether sitting on the couch eating popcorn in front of a fire (me, Sunday), prepping dinner, or pairing with herb-rubbed roasted chicken. - M

Walter Scott Cuvee Freedom Hill Chardonnay 2015

$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($49.95 regular)

The first time we heard this site described as "Chablis-like," I'll admit to thinking "no way." But the third vintage in a row may have me convinced! Whereas Freedom Hill produces structured and bold Pinots, its Chardonnay (in the magic hands of Ken) yields superb delicacy, seashell salinity and minerality to partner with juicy lime and Meyer lemon aromas and flavors, with soft fennel pollen flourishes. - M

Walter Scott X Novo Chardonnay 2015

$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($49.95 regular)

A distinct and beautifully textured Chardonnay, delving into fresh tropical fruits alongside attractive lemongrass and ginger notes that make this an excellent pair with halibut in a very light Thai curry. - M

In 2010 Craig & Robin Williams, of California Cabernet fame, came to Oregon and purchased a few pieces of land in the Eola-Amity Hills and began planting vineyards. What they did would turn heads. For example, the Chardonnay block that we are honored to work with is planted to fifteen different clones of Chardonnay! FIFTEEN!!! It is one of the most unique sites in Oregon, if not the west coast. - Ken & Erica

We're looking forward to helping you with an order. Thank YOU for reading and for your support, and thanks to Ken, Erica, and Lucy!
