I Can't Believe I'm Here: Ca del Baio

After four days, I still can't believe I'm here. Piemonte. Barbaresco. Barolo. The scenery, the food, the hospitality, the wine -- it's all utterly breathtaking.

Our first stop, one of my very favorites: Ca del Baio. The Grasso family is growing and making outstanding wines, as evidenced by our tastings of wines in the bottle and in the cellar.

There's so much to write and so little space. Over the coming months I'll have the time to catalogue details. Now, I invite you to experience the taste of authentic Barbaresco and typical, wonderful wines of the Langa through the lens of Ca del Baio.

Ca del Baio Barbaresco Asili 2014
$33.25 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($36.95 regular)
The story of Ca del Baio began with Asili, is one of the most prestigious vineyards in Barbaresco. Their oldest vines produce an exceptional, elegant Barbaresco that's also one of the best global wine values I've found. Classically structured yet youthfully attractive, exuding beautiful cherry, rose, mineral, and tobacco -- in essence, Asili. I recommend decanting for an hour if you drink now, and pairing with your favorite hearty Italian fare; once I perfect my plin recipe, this will be first up.

Ca del Baio Barbaresco Autinbej 2014
$26.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($29.95 regular)
Autinbej evokes a bygone era when such wines were the union of Nebbiolo grapes from the best, sunniest parts of different crus. Autinbej is a tribute to Giulio Grasso's late father, Ernesto, who often used the Piemontese word to describe the best vineyard exposures. The first Autinbej harvest was in 2014, a superb vintage for Barbaresco. Singing right now, showing just how yummy young Barbaresco can be. Very limited, with the equally fantastic 2015 arriving in December. At right: Marcus taking in the splendor.

Ca del Baio Langhe Nebbiolo 2016
$14.35 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($15.95 regular)
This and the many cask samples of 2016 Nebbiolo hint at the amazing vintage to come. A gift from Ca del Baio to Nebbiolo fans everywhere (and I might say, to wine fans everywhere), I can't recall a Nebbiolo that has been so full of character for the modest price. Nice balance, delicious juice -- it's all about freshness and pure enjoyment.

Ca del Baio Barbera d'Alba Paolina 2016
$13.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($14.95 regular)
It always makes sense to have a Barbera in the house, espeically when it's this one! Tons of charming fruit and food-friendly acidity -- you can pair this with just about anything, from roasted chicken to pizza, and it makes a great party wine too.

Deltetto Brut Rose NV
$26.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($29.95 regular)
A lovely sparkling rose from the Piedmont, with the ideal balance of fruit, creamy texture, and brilliant acidity. Paired exceptionally well with a charcuterie plate in Barbaresco, particularly with the shaved ham. The connection to Ca del Baio: Carlo Deltetto is married to Paola Grasso, so he joined us for lunch before an afternoon of picking Arneis. Above: the Grassos & Avalon
We're looking forward to helping you with an order. Thanks for your support!
