Hundred Suns: The Wait is Over

Remember when Beaux Freres scored the #3 wine in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2016? That wine was made by Grant Coulter.

We've long been a fan of Grant's wines. Ever since we learned he was leaving Beaux Freres after nine years to begin his own project, we've waited eagerly for his first releases. The wait is over.

Grant and wife Renée Saint-Amour have officially launched Hundred Suns. Their three inaugural releases add up to a total of only 350 cases. Despite the minuscule production, expect to hear much more about these special wines with distinctive personalities.

Hundred Suns Old Eight Cut Pinot noir 2015

$26.05 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($28.95 regular)

This wine is all about purity, which begins with its name: a diamond cut from the 1300s that enhanced the stone's natural brilliance without hiding its true nature. A mix of red and blue fruits, a supple and satiny texture, spicy and savory ribbons woven throughout. 250 cases made, a blend of three vineyards: 40% Flanerie, 32% Sequitur, and 28% Jesse James. - Marcus

Hundred Suns Sequitur Vineyard Pinot noir 2015

$37.75 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($41.95 regular)

Weaving together richness, elegance, and understated power, this is generous with dark red fruits, red licorice and lively spices, and Ribbon Ridge undercurrents of forest and earth. Sequitur Vineyard, on Ribbon Ridge, was planted and is Biodynamically farmed by Beaux Freres founder Mike Etzel. Grant was there at the vineyard's inception and based on his experience, selected three blocks comprising mixed Pinot noir clones. - Marcus

This 50 case/two barrel blend was made from their favorite barrel fermented with 50% whole clusters melded with a fully de-stemmed lot fermented in a terracotta amphora. As Grant said, "these two different treatments created a wine from the fermenter with spice, depth and character and an altogether different wine from the amphora with soft, supple curves. We selected one barrel of each, weaving together a wine of open textures, spice, and dark fruit. This wine changes like a chameleon over the course of a meal."

Hundred Suns Minuit Syrah Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 2015

$37.75 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($41.95 regular)

A different and gorgeous expression of Ciel du Cheval Syrah, with a supple and truly pretty character. Opening with molten very dark chocolate, mixed black and red fruits, and subtle floral and espresso hints that emerge with time, this exotic Syrah has its own voice within Northwest red wine. Only 60 cases were produced. - Marcus

"This is special wine everyone told us not to make. We drew inspiration from wines we tasted that were raised in amphora, feeling that maybe this vessel could be the answer to peeling away some of the more ragged tannins created by fermenting Syrah 100% whole cluster. No sulfur was added, and the spontaneous fermentation was allowed to take over. The resulting wines came out black, like midnight [Minuit], with layers of fruit, spice, and texture. Through elevage the wine blossomed, starting off with dark, brambly blue fruit then changing over to savory and bloody tones. After an additional six months in barrel, we couldn't be happier with the result. Our Syrah is rich and exotic, but most of all we believe it will keep you pondering long after the bottle is gone. Special thanks to Andrew Rich for selling us the grapes!" - Grant and Renée
