Highly Rated, Highly Recommended Barolo and Barbera

Happy Friday Barolo fans!

While the depths of summer and Barolo aren't necessarily a logical pair, Piedmont trip planning continues and with that, discoveries of producers new to us. And hot tamale are we excited to have tasted the whole line-up of 2013 Schiavenza Barolo yesterday, each one offering its own intense charm and character and coming with our highest recommendation

Wine Spectator's praise pushes them over the edge: we urge you to mix a case -- and don't forget about the Barbera, a stellar value daily drinker! These wines are fabulous and given the quality, very reasonably priced.

Schiavenza Barolo Broglio 2013

$46.75 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($51.95 regular)
95 points Wine Spectator: "Mint and menthol top notes give way to cherry, plum, leather and tobacco flavors as this red unfolds on the palate. Tightly wound and dense, showing excellent harmony overall, but will likely develop at a glacial pace. Best from 2022 through 2043."
This hits my Barolo "sweet spot," with the perfect combination of old-school elegance and structure meeting a surprisingly drinkable (now, despite what Spectator's note says), layered beauty. Highly recommended! - Marcus

Schiavenza Barolo Serralunga d'Alba 2013
$33.25 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($36.95 regular)
93 points Wine Spectator: "This is accessible despite the resonant tannins. Cherry, berry, leather, licorice, spice and tar flavors mingle on the sleek frame. Firm and long on the detailed finish. Best from 2020 through 2036."
Accessible indeed, more like gulpable! Great fruit purity and style and a fantastic value in Barolo -- I wouldn't hesitate enjoying now, with or without decanting. - Marcus

Schiavenza Barolo Cerretta 2013

$52.15 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($57.95 regular)
94 points Wine Spectator: "Rose, cherry, plum and spice flavors languish effortlessly in this deceptively solid red. The beefy tannins take over midway as this unfolds, yet the lasting impression is balanced, revealing tobacco and underbrush notes. Best from 2022 through 2042."
A very welcoming, classic Barolo nose -- today showing orange, brown spices, rose and fennel -- before leading to the most structured palate of power, density, and resinous balsamic notes lingering through the sweet but firm tannins. An exquisite choice for your cellar. - Marcus

Schiavenza Barbera d'Alba 2013
$14.35 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($15.95 regular)
A wonderful new Piedmont value, showing elegant cherry alongside porcini mushroom and leather. Food pairing ideas abound for this gem. - Marcus
We're looking forward to helping you with an order. Thanks for your support and have a great weekend!
