By Hand: Hundred Suns' Unique and Gorgeous Wines

Hundred Suns epitomizes the Willamette Valley micro-winery, a family project where everything is done by hand. And when two of those hands belong to Grant Coulter, you know the wine is going to be amazing. The labels, which Grant designed, are as gorgeous and unique as the wines.

After 9 excellent years at Beaux Freres, where among other achievements he made the #3 wine in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2016, Grant left to pursue new opportunities and to launch Hundred Suns with his wonderful partner, Renee Saint-Amour.

As much as we adore the new releases from Hundred Suns, we almost have to throw cold water on our enthusiasm. They made 5 wines in 2016 though the total production combined is less than 450 cases! Total! Run, don't walk, to add these to your stash of Oregon Pinot noirs and do not miss the exquisite Syrah, too. We expect them to sell out today and we do not exaggerate.

Hundred Suns Bednarik Vineyard Pinot noir 2016
$40.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($44.95 regular)
This is the Grant Coulter wine we've been waiting for. A masterpiece of elegance and refinement, with depth and layers to the aromatics and flavors. A complex spectrum of red fruit kept us enthralled. Bednarik is a small, cool vineyard with old vines, planted to Pommard in 1988. 100% whole cluster fermented, though in two unique methods: half was picked and placed directly into the fermenter while it was still on the back of the truck in the vineyard; the other half was placed into a 400-liter amphora and closed for 21 days with no manipulation. As Grant describes, there's an electric play between the two ferments evident in the final, beautiful blend. Only 53 cases produced. Here today, gone tomorrow

Hundred Suns Old Eight Cut Pinot noir 2016
$26.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order
($29.95 regular)
A seriously impressive trio of vineyards -- Shea, Sequitur and Bednarik -- forms this excellent value. Plushly textured , with lovely dark fruits, especially plum and cherries. As Grant says, this is like a chameleon the longer it's open, changing with the landscape. 164 cases produced.

Hundred Suns Shea Vineyard Pinot noir 2016
$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($49.95 regular)
A powerful wine, as you'd expect from Shea Vineyard, one of Oregon's best known and perhaps even iconic vineyards. Strawberry and redcurrant appears throughout, with a decadently creamy finish highlighting candied dark red fruits and enlivening spice accents. An excellent expression of Shea, 123 cases produced.

Hundred Suns Sequitur Vineyard Pinot noir 2016
$44.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($49.95 regular)
From Beaux Freres' co-founder Mike Etzel's Sequitur Vineyard, this two-barrel blend has been blue-fruited since the very beginning. Add a layer of plum and a very pretty sandalwood top note, along with savory umami, subtle minerality and spice and you have a rich and complex dynamo. Only 55 cases made and therefore, extremely limited.

Hundred Suns Klipsun Vineyard Syrah 2016
$37.75 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order
($41.95 regular)
The marriage of powerful and pretty, bursting with purple fruit and flowers. As Grant describes it, "like the bounty of the Pacific Northwest: blackberry, marionberry, and blueberry with a hint of warm, dusty earth. A final kiss of savory marrow adds ballast and dimension." A March Northwest Big Reds Club selection and also, very limited (53 cases produced).

We're looking forward to helping you with an order. Thanks for your support!
