Breaking Our Own Rules: Horsetail Pinot Noir

We have a simple protocol for the middle of December: we don't taste new wines because we don't have the time or the focus. Man are we happy we broke our own rules. In the midst of holiday fulfillment madness, the 2016 Horsetail Pinot noir emerged like a ruby beacon of joy!
For those who don't recall Horsetail, it is a label started in 2007 by the Etzel boys -- Jared, Mike, and Nathan -- the three sons of Michael Etzel, founding winemaker of Beaux Freres. The boys have grown into professionals: Jared is now winemaker at prestigious newcomer Domaine Roy; Mike is winemaker at Beaux Freres; Nathan contributes his engineering talents. While they are busy making some of the highest-end Willamette Valley Pinots by day, they've continued to deliver a stunning Pinot value in Horsetail, even more evident with this awesome 2016.

By leaps and bounds, the single best Horsetail Pinot noir since the boys' first vintage, 2007. The most refined Horsetail (age does that to us), it still embodies a fuller, richer style. Packed with intricately woven layers of fruit, moving from black cherry to a mix of Oregon wild berries, we love its superb length that balances freshness and flavor sweetness. Finish it off with a shaving of creme brulee top and you have an absolutely delicious Pinot. We highly recommend it! A blend from Jesse James, Nysa, and Sunny Mountain vineyards. - Marcus

And to further show off the winemaking skills of Mike Etzel the junior, here's a whole lot of proof that the apple fell right at the base of the tree:

96 points Wine Spectator: "A seductive wine that combines structure with harmony and a silky texture. Vivid black raspberry, rose petal and mocha espresso flavors build richness and dance on the long finish. Drink now through 2025." Very limited!
We're looking forward to helping you with an order. Thanks for your support and happy holidays!
