A summer jolt of energy -- that's how I'll describe today's wines. Two fantastic, super-small production Pinot noirs from Erin Nuccio, owner and winemaker of Haden Fig and Evesham Wood and one of the best winemakers in the Willamette Valley, if not the country.
Haden Fig Le Puits Sec Pinot noir 2014

A tale of two single vineyard Pinots...with a twist. Erin makes the wines of Evesham Wood and Haden Fig. Le Puits Sec, Evesham Wood's certified organic estate vineyard, planted in 1986, is one of the Willamette Valley's gems and an unabashed favorite. In past vintages, all the grapes from Le Puits Sec went into Evesham Wood bottlings but in 2014, Erin "stole" a fermenter and instead of using the proprietary Evesham "J" yeast, he let it ferment spontaneously and bottled it with the Haden Fig label.
The result is a gorgeous, energetic wine loaded with Le Puits Sec character: dark cherry and fresh plum, rosemary and sage, with a minutes-long finish echoing Pinot noir purity. Shadings of crushed rose petal and minerals add further intrigue and depth to this beauty that can be opened and enjoyed now or aged for up to a decade. Only 3 barrels were produced. I highly recommend it. - Marcus

One barrel of sublime, ageworthy Pinot noir, from old vines in the Eola-Amity Hills. Engaging, dynamic and unfurling its layers, with bright and red elements melding with dark and savory notes. Super elegant and refined -- while I refer to it as built for the cellar, it was utterly charming yesterday when opened and is even more so today as I revisit it. - Marcus
