The Mark Ryan team - Mark McNeilly and Mike Macmorran - are making easily some of the best red wines in Washington and moreover, on the West Coast. And just when we thought they had reached their winemaking pinnacle, this batch of releases blew the doors off our expectations.
$25.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($28.95 regular)
An outstanding Bordeaux blend, and an outstanding value, this drinks well above its price. Every bit as good as the 2012 - better actually. Packed with ripe black and blue fruits, with a velvety texture and long finish. This blend benefits from Mark's new plantings on Red Mountain and in Horse Heaven Hills. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. - Marcus & Andy
Mark Ryan Lonely Heart Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
$85.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($94.95 regular)
Released February 14. Holy WOW. Stunningly pure Cabernet, this is clearly one of Washington State's flagship Cabernets. Incredible wine - as good as Washington gets. - M&A
94-97 points Wine Advocate: "The star of the 2013s is without a doubt the 2013 Lonely Heart Cabernet Sauvignon! This is the top wine of the estate and it's the first wine that's put together in the cellar (the Dead Horse functions as a second wine) and in 2013 it's a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Gorgeous on all counts, with full-bodied concentration, building tannin and lots of cassis, lead pencil shavings, violets and spring flower aromas and flavors, this thrilling wine will stand toe-to-toe with the greatest Cabernets coming out of Washington. As with all of this team's wines, it has an elegance and seamlessness that will allow it to impress on release, yet it will still benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and keep for 25 years."
Mark Ryan Long Haul 2013
$46.75 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($51.95 regular)
93-95 points Wine Advocate: "Seeing 62% new French oak, it exhibits perfumed and complex notes of violets, cassis, black plums, licorice and wet rock-like minerality on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, incredibly polished and refined, with, again, sensational purity of fruit, it builds nicely in the glass, has good tannic grip, and should age gracefully. I think it's the finest vintage of this cuvee to date." 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot.
Very limited. We concur the stunning nature of 2013 Long Haul. - M&A
$49.45 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($54.95 regular)
Much tighter than the other offerings, this will no doubt reach the typical level of greatness with more time in the bottle. Powerful and concentrated, best to leave this alone for 3-4 years. 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot , 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. - M&A
Mark Ryan Lost Soul Syrah 2013
$43.15 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($47.95 regular)
Mark Ryan isn't as known for Syrah as for Cabernet, but the Lost Soul has been one of our favorite Washington Syrahs for the last two vintages. Crack one and you'll see why. Drinking superbly already, this is beautifully textured, aromatic Syrah. - M&A
Wine Advocate 92-94 points: "The 2013 Lost Soul Syrah should be as good as the '12, if not better. Inky purple in color, it exhibits lots of cooler-climate notes of pepper, bouquet garni, crushed rock and pure blackberry fruit. Aged in 40% new French oak puncheons and all from the Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley, it's rich, medium to full-bodied, and perfectly balanced, with lively acidity and no shortage of texture or depth. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and age gracefully."
